Hi, I’ve recently added in a midnight daisy clove coral to the tank.

I’ve been watching this in the store for a couple of weeks as a colony and decided to buy it for a section of my tank.

Added it in and within hour or so only half of the polyps had opened up, giving it time with no lights etc.

We’re on the 3rd day now and it’s been fully closed and can’t get it open. The colony consists of 2 rocks which the store broke apart which didn’t effect the coral (coral started as 2 plugs and never attached)

In medium flow / light, parameters are in good order and no algae covering them or near by rocks.

Any suggestions? Just performed water change this evening to allow for any errors in mine or stores testing.

Thank you

I would see what the N03 and P04 is since they luv some nutrients in their water.
Aye, I’ve turned my skimmer off for a day now and feeding heavier to increase it! Hopefully we will see them open up in the next couple of days

Some clove polyps tend to grow quickly and be invasive.... Just FYI.
Thanks, they said these ones do! But I’m cool with that as it’s got its own section. The stems it uses to reach out on won’t go as far as the next rock

Just want the guys to open first😂
I have no experience with clove polyps due to the concerns on being invasive.

That said - sometimes new additions take a week or two to acclimate and act properly. Gonis in particular are quite shy at first.

What kind of light and flow are they in now?

Thanks,

I’ve currently got a gyre at the opposite side of the tank.

Picture 1 is on top of the rock so this is receiving moderate to high flow

Picture 2 is at the lower end of the same rock, this is receiving the returning flow from the gyre, so lightly less but still a gentle/moderate flow.

To note, both swaying not just being blown in one direction

As for light, this is in a 50/75 par area

Update on the clove coral, it’s still not opened but hasn’t bleached etc

Noticed a small feeder come out and it’s actively in and out as and when fish swim past.

Any further advice?

If it was mine I would dip it in SeaChem dip with iodine or another dip of your choice and then a mild peroxide solution since it looks full of algae.
80% tank water - 20% of 3% peroxide for 2-3 min.

Thank you, would you suggest a freshwater dip? Would this do the same?

I’ve had this coral from the store for 3/4 days, it was open in the store and then hasn’t opened since. (My tanks not really having algae issues)

I have tried cloves many times and it’s a very picky coral. I believe I’ve tried 6 frag of it, from 6 different vendors/sellers over the last 5 years.

5/6 never opened

1/6 opened quick, in the first few hours, and opened every day on its own and needed no encouraging or special treatment. It grew well, not to fast or slow.

I don’t know what it is about this coral but for me it’s hit or miss, and that’s a shame because I do like it.

The polyp is in those stalks. Whole retracted it will look like a bulge. Like a golf ball in a straw. As they open, the bulge moved closer and closer to the end of the stalk. That’s how you track progress in this state

Good luck!

That’s really helpful and good to know! It appears to have them right at the end, so I’m assuming it’s almost ready but we will soon see
