Well, in fairness, I had 7 leopard wrasse in the tank and they tear through pods pretty quickly as well. That just dawned on me, believe it to not. So I think it depends on several factors -- but no way they could have outcompeted 7 leopard wrasse..

Thats a fair assumption. I do like the look of the leopards. I can see why you have them!

older thread but looking for any updates or new opinions in this topic.

I see that @spiraling seem to have success mixing Mandy types of different sexes but thinks he lost some because of starvation. However that could be because of his large pod eater population.

anyone else successful with say one male and one female of different types?

I have had my aquarium for about a year and i have always planned to get a mandarin. i have actually purchases different pods at a couple different points. My aquarium is a 90 gallon mixed reef. I have a refugium in my sump with all kinds of macro algae also. I have been preparing for this seance i purchased my tank. I want to put in both at the same time. My question is can i have a red and green mandarin in the same tank? or there 2 species that are more comparable? I am thinking one male one female.

I know this post is older but I have a male mandarin and a male dragonet and they are buddies. They hang out together all the time.

I have had a green, red and spotted mandarin in the same 30 gallon tank before. I have found the trick is to train them on frozen or pellet food (i prefer frozen because it is healthier in most cases) because they can eat more freely and not have to worry about foraging to fill up and that takes the territorial aggression away since they aren't focused on keeping a particular place for food. You have to make them believe the food is alive, but once they eat it a few times you can just drop the frozen food in your tank and they will eat if off the bottom. I am currently training my green mandarin dragonet now in my new tank and will be adding a spotted one once he is eating the frozen blood worms and mysis shrimp. You can look up training methods on you tube. I hope this helps.
