Modifying Light Fixture

I was wondering if anyone has modified a light fixture or seen anyone else do it. I currently have a Current Sunpod with 150W HQI DE MH. I was thinking about removing the internal ballast and replacing it with an external retrofit ballast. I have a 30 gallon and was just thinking about making the light stronger. the tank is open top so I can't build a hood and I cant afford a new light. Can this be done?

i re-did my outer orbit fixture last yr. i went from 2 x 150w to 2 x 250w. other than having to run the 250w ballast external, its pretty easy to do. all you need is new ballast and bulb holders and a little courage.
