Not sure if this is a good thread to post this to. I bought this coral at auction and it was supposed to be a Monti Confusa. Sorry for the bad phone camera Pic, hopefully its good enough. So far the thing only encrusts, no branching. Is it normal to do this or did they give me a different kind of monti?

Yes its normal that they encrust before they shoot out branches but i have no way of knowing until it does but it looks like one that has the ability to branch

Its my take on it but time will tell and maybe someone with more experience in branching montis than me could give you a better answere 😊

Too small to know, you gotta give it time.

Confusa is a very fast grower, I don't know why a seller would try to pawn off something else when that is a robust and easy coral to aquaculture. It encrusts, plates, and branches.

I got this from AquaSD and they have given me a few incorrect corals in the past. I haven't really minded since I pic them up at the shop and most of them were $5 or less. This was a tiny frag and its just encrusted to about the size of a golf ball. Was hoping it would start branching soon.

I would give it more space, that other coral is too close. The monti will base out and kill and grow over it, I would give it a good 6" of space

I had to trade mine in to the LFS after a year, it and a sunset monti overgrew everything. I couldn’t find a bucket big enough and had to hand carry it while my wife broke several speed limits.

No more encrusting corals for me after that day. Half of a size 13 shoe for scale.
