My fellow reefers, I am in a way proud and nervous. I just bought my first sps coral. I bought an “encrusting montipora”. I’m mainly posting this just to ask for any tips or advice. I got is yesterday and all polyps are out so I’m assuming that’s a good sign. Also what do monti’s look like when they aren’t doing to well? Or what to look for in an unhealthy piece?
TIA

Congratulations, what color is it, do you know its name?
Polyps being out is a good thing. Keep him in medium light for a couple of weeks to get used to your water. Some flow is good to keep sand and stuff off.

Thanks I can’t really get a good pic of it but this was the piece I bought. Is there any other signs of stress to look for?

And no picture?
You got some learning to do. ;)

If it looses color, not good. Turning grey or bleaching, not good.

Did you dip it for pests?

Also is the blue/white on the montipora a different color variety or did I accidentally buy an unhealthy piece?

IME Montis are the easiest of sps to keep. Far less demanding then most. If the polyps stop showing up and the color fades that may indicate that you have a problem. Otherwise it looks good under your lighting.....when your lights are that blue it's kinda hard to see if there are any other problems

Keep that thing isolated. Imo encrusting monties grow easier than soft corals and can quickly take over. Keep alk/calcium up and it will grow like a weed.

Hey guys so the Monti is still doing good, (besides the fact that I accidentally dropped it in the sand bed) but it’s recovering. Full polyp extension on most of the coral itself and it’s getting a really nice red to it. Since I’ve had success with the Monti do you guys think it’s reasonable to try an Acro? Honest question and I’ll take any criticism

Hard to say off 10 days of success with an encrusting monti. If your tank is established and you feel confident get a cheap one to try it out.
