Good to know. I suppose we had also been looking at a lavender tang, also Acanthurus i know, but i believe it is also known to be less aggressive? Perhaps you have another Acanthurus you may recommend? Who knows, maybe my wife will find a bristletooth tang she really likes.
Also, i typically feed 4 times a day and always have nori at hand. My old 2 bar rabbitfish trained me well.

The Lavender is a great choice and will pair well with the Chocolate. They have very similar temperaments, IME (I have both).

Edit**** had both. My Mag FF killed my Chocolate

Couple pictures of the tank. Really tried to make sure the scape would offer plenty of line-of-sight breaks and caves.

And thats settled. 2 tangs (will most likely go with the lavender) and a trigger will do it for the big dawgs in this tank. Just gotta fill it with wrasses and i can sit back and enjoy it. Thanks for all the responses

Ahh, now if you're talkin' wrasses, we gotta pull in the big dogs. @Slocke you're up, buddy.

Adding wrasse to a tank that already has a triggerfish and tang could be difficult. So we're looking at tough Halichoeres, small Thalassoma, and maybe something from the bodianinae subfamily.

Halichoeres:
  • Timor
  • Melanurus
  • Dusky
  • Red head
  • Jade
  • Checkerboard
Thalassoma:
  • Blue head
  • Cortez / rainbow
  • Five stripe
Bodianinae:
  • Harlequin tusk
  • Two spot hogfish
  • Crescent tail hogfish
  • Lyretail hogfish
Misc:
  • Seagrass wrasse
  • Candy cane wrasse
  • Two spot Māori

Why do you always leave out the humble Halichoeres cosmetus?! Why the hate? It is a better dressed Mel. Also, I'm not a wrasse expert, but the Harlequin may not be appropriate for his size tank. Don't those guys get fairly large?

Because I wanted the toughest of the tough. Not a wimp! Jk
But triggers and tangs scare me

I’d prefer a 6’ tank but they rarely pass 6-8” in captivity. A few of these wrasse are in that category. Actually a bigger problem with tusks is they can be shy.

Also Thalassoma are well known b******. I blame it on the crowd they hang out with in the wild. Tangs, triggers, and other nerdowells

Nah, an Adorned would be fine with the Chocolate and Lavender, and the color would be a nice pop, too. Glowing orange racing stripes anyone?!

That’s what the Timor is for. It’s like an adorned but a rat b******

And prettier

Timor wrasse seems interesting. Dusky is certainly one of the wrasses ill be adding.

That said im not going touch Thalassoma in a mixed reef. Been there done that. I loved the fish that i had but they were a tad aggressive for my liking.

Bluejaw Triggerfish is maybe 3” and extremely docile. It shys away when even a damsel or a closn swims by. My plan is to fill the tank up within the next 4 months while the trigger and tang are both juveniles so ill be adding a flasher or fairy sometime later this month. I feel confident that there will be minimal aggression just from my personal observation of the tank, but of course if it doesnt go well then I will know for sure.

@OrchidMiss ive seen your tanks, how has your trigger done with adding wrasses?
My trigger doesn't care about the wrasses at all, until they try to beat him to the large chunks of food. Then they're much quicker than him and usually are able to snag a food without any problems at all.

I did have issues when I tried adding a lineatus, but that wasn't with the trigger.
Borbonius anthius and Falco hawkfish chased and killed that wrasse within a matter of hours.

That is sort of what i had expected from a trigger. I have a longnose hawkfish that is slightly aggressive which i am worried about the most but it is really only aggressive to my hand… ha
