While I don't currently live in Las Vegas, I once did and worked for a large aquarium installation and maintenance company. There was no problem having a tank, even a huge one such as the ones in the Casinos.

That said, unless you keep your air conditioner on, you'll need a chiller. I would also recommend keeping a few frozen gallons of RO/DI water in the freezer in case there is a power outage. I say RO/DI in case they leak.

Oh, and welcome to R2R! Good luck on your move!

I do currently live in Vegas I run a Red Sea. It is pretty much the same maintenance as anywhere else.

I would buy a rodi if you don't already have one. Our water here is pretty bad. There's really only one or two stores in the entire city you can trust.

Join our Facebook group. The Vegas community is actually really good and there are reefers everywhere.

Chiller will be necessary if you don't use your A/C. I would buy a battery backup too depending on where you live. Power outages are common in North Las Vegas and some parts of the east side

Welcome..
Been out here over 15 years never experienced a power outage (Henderson). As for my tank I have a 66gal that was setup 2 years ago around December, as for water restriction NO need to worry about that. Join some of the facebook groups like reefs of las vegas, sin city reefers marketplace, Vegas reefs.

Hi
We are about to move to Vegas from the east coast. At this moment I have a 50 Gallons tank. (Mix with SPS and LPS)
I was thinking to start a new tank at my new place but with the heat and water restriction etc...
My question for Vegas members that already have your tank set up.

What are the pros and cons
1. Setting up a tank.
2. Maintenace schedule.

What size tank do you have?

Thanks

My understanding is Vegas is a reefing black hole. No Quality LFS, no support or local farmers on facebook. Do they have even have a MACNA affiliate? No swaps or shows. You'd think its Vegas ... convention capital of the world, but nope on Reefapoolza too.

That said most homes have swimming pools. And yes they are filled. I wouldn't worry about waste water from RODI or water changes on smaller than 300 gallon tank. I was last in Vegas in August visiting in laws and they said its wettest mildest year on record there. They had a years worth of rainfall in one day that summer.

I'd be more worried about scorpions hiding in your equipment.

I can't speak for Las Vegas, but I do live in the Phoenix-desert area. I have my RODI unit hooked up to our irrigation system, so the unused water helps care for our citrus trees. I do keep a lid on the top of my tank due to all the evaporation.

Welcome to the forums! You'll definitely find a lot of info and advice for moving tanks here - a lot of it comes down to how old the tank is, how much planning you can do, the timetable that you can get it moved, and a few other things. Best of luck!

Thanks, Good idea for not wasting water
