Hey guys - have a 40g looking at buying a wave maker. Currently have a gyre 1k - which is better and why, Nero 5 or MP 10 vs 40

If you’re not worried about price then I would go with the MP10. I currently have a Nero 3 and have had multiple MP10s in the past. For $150 the Nero 3 moves a ton of water and has very nice programming capabilities but I feel the MP10 creates much better current. My experiences may be a little skewed though considering how small the tank is which utilizes the Nero. Either way, I don’t think there is a wrong choice

No experience with the MP’s but I have 2 Nero 5’s and wish the 3’s were out when I got em. I have a reefer 250 and they move way too much water. Not a bad thing mind you but I feel like it’s wasted on my tank. I have the one on the right at 26% and the one on the left at a whopping 15% both on Ai’s wave crest setting with a min of 1 and max of the numbers above with a high variance. Tank enjoys them and so do I but too much muscle for me. I guess they should last a long time at my percentages.

If you look closely at the vortechs you’ll notice there are no cords in the tank. The dry side is the motor which sits on the outside of the tank. The wet side is what sits inside the tank. This is nice too because if the wet side breaks it can be easily replaced whereas with most other power heads if the same parts fail the whole unit needs to be sent in for service or get replaced

That’s good to know especially since I have the gyre too - just not doing good with my sps - so I think more flow is needed

MP10 - No cord in the tank.
Nero - Less expensive, can slightly aim the stream

An MP40 would be pretty darn big for a 40 gallon. Unless you are planning to upgrade to a larger tank, MP10 is plenty.

Well like Jason Fox said flow is the second most important thing to get right, right behind water quality. It’s a crazy balancing game I tell ya with two over strong pumps in a mixed reef. Took me forever to get right and sometimes I still tinker. The acros look happy but the LPS is holdin on for dear life sometimes.
would you consider 2 nero 3’s? Better than 1 big one and my friend brought on over a 3 a couple weeks ago and I still could not hit 90% in my tank without all he all breaking loose. Crazy strong little pumps

wayne, where do you mount them on your reefer 250? Can you share a picture of the whole tank? thanks!

Got one on the right glass shooting across the tank at about 25% and one on the back wall shooting front at 12%. Everything has a nice counter clockwise movement. Both pumps are set at random high variance
