Are the mp40s really worth it. I know that’s like the standard wave maker that everyone has nowadays. I currently have gyres but tired of cleaning them so much and literally takes me house to scrub every nook and cranny. Are the mp40s worth the price tag? I’ve spent so much on gear recently not sure if I want to spend more yet lol

I think they are worth it. Keep an eye on the selling forum and fb marketplace ive nabbed all of mine for 200-250$ slightly used and in great shape. I run 4 of them in my 120 and 2 in my 80. Usually clean them all at one in a 5 gal bucket. Let them all soak in citric acid for a few hours and everything comes off pretty quick with a scrub brush. Make sure you get the specific mollycote lube for the shaft as well to help keep them running for a long time. Ive only broken a couple cages on mine after owning most of them for about 5 years. I really like no wires in the display and the program ability is great.

IMO it's a bit hard to get a useful opinion from someone who already spent so much $ on these...
Gyres are indeed a pain as they decline as fast as they get dirty. MP40 is not the only solution to gyres. I have Aqua Medic Smartdrift 11.1. It was about 180 euros, has a low profile, is powerful, and controlled by an app through Wi-Fi. Ecotech Marin clearly sell high quality products, but outrageously overpriced. My ChatGPT5 compared several types, including MP40, and essentially recommended the AI Nero5

I have purchased a bunch of the Jebao DMP 40’s, (ecotech clone) and then purchase just the wet sides of the mp 40’s. Seems to work and be the middle ground for me.

You may want to check out the DMPs. App and control not as good...but deliver similar flow as my old Mp40s...and are silent...for a third of the price.

Well first do you mind wires in the tank, a lot of the value is in the visual with mp40’s, if you don’t mind a whole powerhead and wire in your tank you’ve got options.

If you can’t stand the look of a powerhead , like me, then definitely worth it if buying used. Keep an eye on the marketplace, I got both of mine in the 250$ range. No need to buy new when they are made so well, reminds me of Mercedes pre 2000’s.

Actually got one on eBay that was meh, but it works. The one I got off the marketplace was cheaper and in better condition.

Anyways at that price it’s a clear winner, at full price things get murky.
