Are the mp40s really worth it. I know that’s like the standard wave maker that everyone has nowadays. I currently have gyres but tired of cleaning them so much and literally takes me house to scrub every nook and cranny. Are the mp40s worth the price tag? I’ve spent so much on gear recently not sure if I want to spend more yet lol

I think they are worth it. Keep an eye on the selling forum and fb marketplace ive nabbed all of mine for 200-250$ slightly used and in great shape. I run 4 of them in my 120 and 2 in my 80. Usually clean them all at one in a 5 gal bucket. Let them all soak in citric acid for a few hours and everything comes off pretty quick with a scrub brush. Make sure you get the specific mollycote lube for the shaft as well to help keep them running for a long time. Ive only broken a couple cages on mine after owning most of them for about 5 years. I really like no wires in the display and the program ability is great.

IMO it's a bit hard to get a useful opinion from someone who already spent so much $ on these...
Gyres are indeed a pain as they decline as fast as they get dirty. MP40 is not the only solution to gyres. I have Aqua Medic Smartdrift 11.1. It was about 180 euros, has a low profile, is powerful, and controlled by an app through Wi-Fi. Ecotech Marin clearly sell high quality products, but outrageously overpriced. My ChatGPT5 compared several types, including MP40, and essentially recommended the AI Nero5

I have purchased a bunch of the Jebao DMP 40’s, (ecotech clone) and then purchase just the wet sides of the mp 40’s. Seems to work and be the middle ground for me.

You may want to check out the DMPs. App and control not as good...but deliver similar flow as my old Mp40s...and are silent...for a third of the price.

Well first do you mind wires in the tank, a lot of the value is in the visual with mp40’s, if you don’t mind a whole powerhead and wire in your tank you’ve got options.

If you can’t stand the look of a powerhead , like me, then definitely worth it if buying used. Keep an eye on the marketplace, I got both of mine in the 250$ range. No need to buy new when they are made so well, reminds me of Mercedes pre 2000’s.

Actually got one on eBay that was meh, but it works. The one I got off the marketplace was cheaper and in better condition.

Anyways at that price it’s a clear winner, at full price things get murky.

I do like the Nero’s. But I would need a 7 and at that point I could almost just get the mp. I just wanna know that if I spend that much I’ll have them working good for years. Just hard to swallow spending that much. Even used seems pricey but get what you pay for

Well I just upgraded to this current tank and it came with this rimmed lid that fits perfectly so if there’s wires it has to be propped up a little. Guy I bought it from used mps bc wire mounts still on sides. I’ve found some in the 250$ range. Yeah with all features with app it doesn’t seem to bad then

I have purchased mp40 and Jebao. The mp40 are definitely higher quality, quieter, better connectivity and usability. Preset programs the make sense are nice too. I have an mp10 on my frag tank that was manufactured in 2010 so I have had good luck with longevity as well. I also don’t fully trust the Jebao when it comes to the controller connection and electrical. None of it is as high quality. Unfortunately I’m limited by budget so I buy Jebao now. They work but no where near as nice IME.
Also resell/rade value is high on MP product line fwiw. Jebao pumps will probably end up in a bin or trash after moving on from them.

I burned up 6 al neros in less than a year. My personal experience is those are crap quality pumps.

In short, nope in my opinion at least. I have the MP40s and I have the Jebao knock offs DMP 40s and Jebao regular wave makers also. They all fail, Jebaos are just way cheaper to replace.

I have 6 mp40s. I will be replacing them with something else as they fail. I'm tired of bearing failures on dry sides that have not been dropped. I also have mp10s and wet side magnets are splitting so I'm pretty much fed up with vortechs in general. I suppose if you can find used ones that aren't noisy and don't have cracked magnets and they're cheap enough maybe?
Granted mine have been running for years but for the price they should run as long as my old Tunze that was a fraction of the price and still going strong after 10 years. IMO the only thing they offer is no wires in the tank. They're are still wires visible running on the outside glass. No adjustment for flow direction can also be an issue. If they were half the price I may consider them.
I would look into the jebao knock offs if no wires in the tank is a must. I have one but i stuck it behind the rocks to try to keep detritus out and I haven't touched it since adding it 6-8 month ago. Mine has an external control which TBH I don't mind because I don't fiddle with flow very often anyway. Its still spinning but that's all I can say about it because i haven't touched it since i added it to the display.
This may not be a problem for everyone but i get a lot of little critters like limpets and asterinas that reproduce in my tank. Recently I've been having problems with those critters finding a way into the MPs then causing a loud clicking noise that requires the wetside be cleaned. This happens weekly at times. I do not have the problem with powerheads that do not sit against the glass like the mp wetside.

Having a eurobraced tank, and Not wanting to having wires in the tank are why I went with mp40s. There’s absolutely no reason they should be expensive as they are though. Buy used as suggested.

I wish they would make a gyre style pump that operates in the same way with the motor on the outside.

If you don’t have a braced tank, I would seriously look at the tunze orcas.

I guess I’ve been fortunate. I finally got mp40’s after years of cheaper ones giving me fits. So happy as they are so much easier to maintain, look better with no wires and easy to swap out with extra dry sides bought. When I’m ready I’ll be back for more mp-40 and hope they are as good as the ones I bought 5 years ago still running strong.

After MP40 wetside rusting and wiping out tens of thousands of SPS, I’ll never purchase them again.

What is the specific mollycote lube?

Molykote* 111

One tube lasts forever. After I take the pumps out to clean and scrub them down. I put a small dab at the base of the magnet on the wetside when re assembling and let that lube the shaft as its put back togeather. Ive never had an issue with any of my wetside shafts or magnets. I clean my pumps every couple months.
