Another tang question,
I currently have a purple tang and tomini tang in my 100g 4ft tank.
I really want to add a yellow tang?
I know this is pushing the limits of the size of my tank, ive created my aquascape to allow free swimming space up and down each side of the tank and front to back.

Would this be do able? Apart from the tank size I realise agression will also be an issue

Purple tang might not have any of it, but you can try the mirror trick and an acclimation box to improve your chances

Thanks, I got the purple at the end of last year which came from a LFS which was closing down. The purple was in a display tanks with other yellows and a gem tang.

Not that makes any difference now as it has found its territory in my tank.

I figured then best bet would be a much smaller captive bred yellow?

Going for a much smaller fish due to my tank size?
Rather than getting a larger yellow?

Getting a smaller yellow would probably mean it would get bullied to death, imo.

And if you are telling me that you are getting a smaller yellow because of the tank size, I think that is telling in terms of whether or not you should add that yellow tang to the tank if you can’t seem to handle the tang at its full size

Oh i see, I just thought as long as there was a big size difference between the 2 of them the chances would be better..

So I need one thays bigger than the purple ideally then?

I agree with bluemon

But also watched a youtube video that @FishOfHex posted where he 3d printed decoy tangs to reduce aggression. Seemed to work pretty well for him. His youtube video is linked in the item

How big is the purple? At adult sizes you’ll be lucky if the purple doesn’t murder the tomini, never mind adding another, less aggressive tang from the same genus. There are exceptions to every rule but I wouldn’t. It’s extremely unlikely to work long term.

I'd say it's probably mid size, at them moment the purple shows no interest in any other fish.

I did have a copperband butterfly for about a year and the purple showed no interest in that either

As it gets bigger it will likely get more aggressive, especially with similar fish, and especially in a relatively small tank.

The other fish aren’t food competitors, for the most part, or from the same genus. Plus you’d be adding the yellow to the purple’s territory.

I had a three year old fox face in my 4ft tank that had never as much as nipped another fish. I swapped out a square tail bristle tooth for a gem tang and oh boy, it went absolutely psychotic. The gem was big enough to defend itself but it was harassed for weeks, day and night, until the gem snapped and put baby in a corner. I added the same fish with a bunch of other tangs into my 6ft tank at the same time and it’s back to being totally chilled.

It’s not impossible but you’re playing with fire, and starting on the back foot with the most aggressive fish already being established.

Yes, as ive always wanted a yellow.
Worst case scenario I'd just have to rehome the purple i think..

Depends on the individual fish I guess, and will never know till I try it 😂

Good luck to you. My purple and tomini barely tolerate each other. The tomini always has a bite mark on it from the purple. And the tomini is a jerk to everything else in the tank. Im seriously considering trading both of them for a couple yellows at a local pet store. If it wasn't such a pain trying to catch them they'd already be gone.

Oh really? My tomini just keeps himself to himself. He shy and doesn't bother anyone

I once had a scopas who was an absolute bully to everything in the tank. Who when I rehomed it back to the lfs, told be he was a bully in every tank they out it in the shop too!

I'm guessing it's down to the personality of the individual fish

Actual results: I added 3 smaller yellow tangs to a larger purple tang with success. However it was a 300+ gal tank and it took a while with the help of an acclimation box. Even when finally added blood was shed. It will not be easy and with only adding 1 yellow in a small tank, I’m not optimistic. I seldom, if ever, say NO but imo this is a no….I would try a chocolate tang, maybe?
