mushroom rock, is it a mistake?

I have read conflicting things about mushroom rock. Some sources say that this is a good thing to add as your 1st coral in a new system. And from reading posts it seems that many reefers wish they had not introduced mushrooms into their system and view them as a pest.

I am planning on keeping a Z&P garden, rics, acans and then maybe down the road some monti caps and other plating sps.

Would love to hear opinions. Thanks!

Honestly when i do it over...no mushrooms unless they are the amazing jawbreaker ones!! Z&Ps and rics are a good start as long as your parameters are good.

If you like shrooms it's fine... If you plan on keeping softies only it Would be okay but if you start adding sticks etc they will sting them and take over... Shrooms are cool and to each there own but there like a Kenya tree total dominance!!!! The choice is yours lol...

Well, I have seen your jawbreaker... drool... I would DEFINATELY put those mushrooms in. Just on the fence about the others. So regualar mushrooms will not kill z & P's or rics?

On the one hand, I am totally new to the coral thing, and like the dipping the toe in aspect, on the other, I have had about 6 yrs FOWLR experience and feel pretty good about my set up.

I started out with 1 red and white mushroom and now have about 15-20 covering a small rock. If you like the look of the mushroom and don't mind it spreading, go right ahead but they are hard to get rid of, once you start. A nice rare 2 or 3 colored mushroom wouldn't be too bad because you could keep cutting and trading them as they spread out.

as someone new to the hobby I'd have to say I sort of regret the mushrooms. I bought a small rock with a couple small shrooms on it and they have quickly taken over my tank. I'm not entirley sure what I'm going to do to get rid of them yet. I dont have anything nice or expensive in there but I'm quickly running out of space in 2 monthes they amount of shrooms has trippled in my tank. I'm ok with it for now but if I could do it over again I never would have bought them.

take them to your lfs for a store credit, a lot of the mom and pop stores are glad to take the extras off you hands, also give them to newbies in your club, I have one tank with several different kinds, I have had a couple of different ones, that in the last two years have gotton larger, but have not reproduced, I have seen a couple of tanks that have been taken over by them,

I have had these for a couple of years, one has yeilded about five of each in 2 years

Mushrooms are great additions.
But with any other coral, they will grow and multiply.
Take care of your tank and they won't be a problem.

I've kept mushrooms in my reef for years. No problems. They don't really grow up the pillars.

Mushrooms were my first favorites. Hardy, beautiful, and perfect for learning how to frag.^^ It might or might not grow like crazy in your tank. If you do get one, try to find some that you really like in case they do take off.
