So... my Nem split back in October. The piece that split off didn't survive and the main piece bounced back.

This is what my Nem used to look like:

But now, it looks like this:

Sorry about the blue light. I was in a rush to make the post.

It has been this way for about two days. In the last week, I have:

1. Begun churning and vacuuming sand to deal with a Cyano issue.
2. Switched back to Instant Ocean Reef Crystals from Red Sea Pro salt.
3. Removed the cover from my tank with just lighting remaining.
4. Reduced the white in my lighting from 100% down to 30% (to get colors to pop more and discourage Cyano).

I began running carbon at the time of this post in case anything locked in the substrate was irritating the Nem.

Personally, I want to monitor it for a while and see if things change back. Is this a good idea? I don't want to wait too long if intervention is indicated. Waiting too long could be the difference between a bounce back and a tank nuke.

I would keep a close eye on the water parameters. Stirring the sand can create spines in them.

Overall, I would closely monitor the nem.

A couple of points. First the 2nd nem doesn't even begin to look like the first one. I wouldn't have guessed that first pic was a BTA.

Second, cutting back the white light is fine. And it will help reduce algae growth. But cyano is a bacteria, not an algae and it doesn't do photosynthesis. Vacuuming it up and increasing the flow a little in the areas where it develops will help reduce it.

I'm fighting an algae outbreak and I'm leaving on vacation for 10 days. So rather than doing a 'black out' I run just the blue and violet leds and cover the tank with a dark, heavy towel so no outside (white) light gets in. The corals all open up and look great, but the algae really can't grow much if at all.

Which is why I made this post.

Yes... the Cyano is gone from the tank. I was just giving details about what has been done to the tank in the last week.
