I have a Reef Octopus 110-INT skimmer that was giving me a lot of trouble, constantly fluctuating between under skimming and overskimming. I believe the root of the problem is the design of the skimmer itself. The main issue bubbles were too big at the neck. I tried limiting air intake, raising/lowering water level and of course a deep clean of the skimmer and pump but the issue persisted.
I accidentally dropped fluidizing media inside the skimmer while cleaning and decided to experiment. I think this has helped breaking down bubbles further (just like a pinwheel would) and my bubbles at the neck are now half the size, producing really nice, frothy skimmate.

I used an Amazon knockoff version of K1 Micro by Evolution Aqua, but I’m going to experiment further by adding more of it, and also using spongeless bioballs (all plastic sold by BRS) but so far I’m very pleased with the results. Hope this helps tuning your skimmers

Some pictures after this happy accident. I wish I had pictures before but the bubbles at the neck were >1inch
