FYI, they do float quite well. I am going to build a smaller version and see if I can wedge it under some rocks in the corner of my tank. hidden but effective.

H@rry, I heard that the plastic bath scrubbers are good too, but they would seem like major detritus traps to me.

I guess the argument would be that the chaeto would utilize/consume the detritus about as fast as it accumulated it.

No let it build up more. It will work more effectively if you leave some algae on it after cleaning it, you need algae to grow algae, so your next 7 days should be even better.

Not necessarily i clean my screens completely and get tons of growth after 7 days. Even if i put on a new screen i get full sheet of algae after 1 week. What bulbs are you using and how close are the lights? My build thread somewhere has a pic of a new screen after 7 days full of gha. I find that the more algae you leave on the more dark algae grows and the less filtering it seems to do.

I'm using 2 - 23w 5000k, 1600 lumen cfl bulbs about 3" away from the screen on both sides.

I use these from walmart. They are actually listed as t2 bulbs and are a bit thinner than regular cfl and ive noticed tons better growth from these than other 23-26w bulbs. Seems thinner is better in the flourescent lighting world.
