my upgrade journal/journey

ok done! almost! haha. i had my husband help me and he found one of the little elbows is broken. so as soon as i have that replaced should be good to go! hopefully those arent hard to find!

ok. up and running. but im wondering if we put the pressure gauge in the wrong spot. :( should the pressure be 75 @UncommonSense ?
Pressure at 75PSI is good! — you can go as high as 85PSI (let me know if you’d like to know how to adjust that), but anything over 65-70PSI is going to make those RO membranes a lot happier!

You should see a corresponding drop in RO product water TDS, pre-DI stages!

dense question- do i need to keep this sand wet after i rinse it?
If you used chlorinated water I would rinse with dechlorinated water, unless its "live" sand, you can actually spread it out on something clean and let it dry

yes its live sand. is ok to just leave it in buckets outside? @Fish Styx ?
Live sand quickly becomes unalived when we rinse in chlorinated water. I wouldn't put it in buckets outside, I'd put it in buckets inside with salt water just above the top of the sand in the bucket. It'll start to repopulate the sand with some bacteria. You can even drop a couple of drips of that ammonia you bought in the bucket to help bump up the bacteria count even more quicklier.

so how in the world do you make sure you get all of the tap water out of the bucket before filling it with saltwater??
You don't have to. Drain off as much as you can and then add fresh saltwater (or aged from your tank). The bacteria can and will live in lower salinity.

What Tim said, and if you are worried about any residuals, treat the tank with a conditioner like Prime by Seachem. It doesn't have to be that particular one, it's just the one that popped into my nugget first. It'll knock out any chloramine / chlorine from the tap. In such small amounts, I wouldn't be concerned about heavy metal / copper contamination, and any additional silicates will only aid your cycle by feeding diatoms. Just my 2¢

Much better answer than mine. I was going to say to use tweezers to get each grain and dry it off with a towel then blow dry it with a hair dryer or heat gun. Gets your sand nice and dry but it takes a long time 🤣 🤣 🤣

What Tim said +1

anyone got some good tips on cutting down transferring pests? the biggie will be vermitid snails. most of the aiptasia and bubble algae are in the overflows of the old tank
