my upgrade journal/journey

thought i was gonna have a meltdown there for a bit.🥵 FINALLY got these VCA random flow generators on. wow. what a job. thought for sure i was going to bust either a pipe fitting or the tank. but theyre on now and i keep checking for leaks and everything is still dry. phew! someday im going to just leave this tank alone instead of asking for trouble!🥺 i have no idea how you are supposed to know if the return pumps are high or low enough. i had finally got it all dialed in with the old nozzles😳

Did you not get the Flex? Those PETG are tight for sure

Anything over 10-15% power on your Cor-20 pumps will make the RFGs work well!

— you can test by holding a pinch of flake or frozen food to the back of the trumpet nozzle, looking for it to get sucked into the back of the trumpet nozzle, and rapidly ejected out the front!

— any time you’re getting a water suction effect from the slots in the back of the trumpet shaped nozzle, the RFG is functioning as intended!

— if you push TOO much flow through them, the random flow effect (observed easiest with powerheads off/on feed mode) stops occurring… they basically just fire a conical stream at high velocity which doesn't alternate direction! (The water suction/mixing effect will actually grow stronger as you flow more, you just loose random flow at a certain point!)

perfect! ill check tomorrow!

no idea. thought i was gonna fall apart there for awhile til i got them on!
I’m glad nothing broke!

The rigid RFGs are sized to fit genuine LocLine brand segmented hose!

If the segmented hose is of an off-brand, segment dimensions typically vary! — it’s entirely possible that your segmented hose is oversized vs. LocLine, which would explain the amount of force required!

— VCA makes the “flex series” of RFGs out of a flexible rubbery material, specifically to allow them to easily fit over all sorts of random shapes/sizes of segmented line! (A trick to keep in mind for any other RFG applications in the future!)

anyone have a better way to mount corals? i use glue, putty, glue, frag. got up this morning to find my biggest torch had fallen off onto a scoly😭. not sure if itll recover or not

Oh no, that sucks!

Without knowing how you mount them, exactly, it's hard to answer your question. Generally, using super glue will work just dandy. Putty works well too. Maybe you're not using enough or securing them in a good location that makes a lot of surface contact.

man, idk. its the frag that comes off the plug. not the plug off the rock🤷‍♀️
Ohhhh, that's a different story. If that's happening then try adding some additional glue/putty between or onto the plug where the coral is attached.

Do you get most of your coral from the same place?

had to go several hours away for an appointment today. so had a chance to swing in to a reef store!😍 managed to get a piece of tonga rock with a bunch of utter chaos zoas on them. i guess ill just throw the rock in. there are some things on it that i dont want (bubble algae, vermitids), but am not sure how id get the zoas off. clean it off the best i could
