Hello all! I've been cycling my tank ( will be DSH only) its been going for about three weeks. My levels aren't changing. I tested again today ( I test at 9:30 am every time) attaching picture of test. Do I just keep doing the same thing, small water change about every three days. I did add a pinch of flake food on day one to get it started.

I used some nitrifying bacteria to jumpstart a cycle once. I think the saltwater version is Biospira. But even better would be live rock. Do you have any?

I have used Dr. Tims one and only with great results. The BioSpira is a good option as well. The Dr. Tims in my pico only took 3 days to cycle , but I gave it about a week longer of tests just to be sure. Good Luck

I don't want to use live rock (love the look NOT the hitch hikers) I bought Sr Tim's One and only yesterday but its in the fridge. I wasn't sure whether to add it now or not.

I would say go ahead and add it, the sooner the better . You already have ammonia present, so it will go to work right away.

I would not do any more water changes until the cycle is over. Doing them during a cycle will only prolong it.

Thanks Dixie :) I was wondering if I was slowing down the cycling by doing pwc. I think I'll leave it alone for awhile.

Definitely hold off on water changes. The main reason for them is to protect livestock. Since you're starting your tank that's not an issue. Good luck!!

+1^^ don't do a water change until you see ammonia and nitrite at 0. Let the ammonia consuming algae build up a bit. Make sure now also that you don't add anymore food or anything like that. The ammonia is present and will be sufficient for the remainder of the cycle. By the time you do your next water change, all that should be detectable will be nitrate. Then you can start adding animals slowly.

My tank... Well I had originally a 3 gallon marineland. Hated it, very cheap thin acrylic and so I up sized to an Aqueon Evolve 8, LOVE it so far. Well built, thick acrylic, great all in one for the price. When I had DSH's years ago I had them in a marineland 5 gal Hex and it was a nice setup. Unfortunately Hydroids wiped it out and I didn't know about panacur.
This one is simple and should be good. I dumped some One and Only in today so I will test in the a.m
I'll attach pictures in a few.

I do have some macro algae coming in a few days. If it works, great. If not, I'm cool with that too.

Another question. Tested the tank early this morning and got zero's across the board so I added some ammonia and got it to .50ppm just retested and after 10 wait on the test its back to zero. I switched from my 3 gal pico to a new Aqueon Evolve 8. I used the sand and water from the previous tank and used some Dr Tim's. it's acting cycled but I can't wrap my head around a tank cycling so fast.
Any thoughts?
Steph

Brought ammonia back up to .50ppm yesterday. This morning zero across the board again. Fingers crossed because I ordered my Dwarfs. They should be here by Monday or Tues I'm guessing.
