you don't want zero nitrate since corals need them too. I find that algae use up more nutrient than chaeto in my experience. I was having algae issues in the display when I was using chaeto in the back chamber. I removed the chaeto, added some plastic mesh for the algae to hold on too. the algae in my display went away about 2 week after the algae established in the back chamber.I currently have chaeto in chamber 2 with a nicrew led light on a 13hr on period. It does ok and grows chaeto quickly but I like keeping my fish fat and feed heavily and this keeps my no3 high. The DIY nitrate destroyer is suppose to remove down to zero nitrates and adjustable up to your liking via flow and dosage. It essentially equivalent to doing a 10% water change every 24hrs. The guy who came up with the idea has a beautiful tank with no water changes. He adds trace elements and such.
Poor Man's Nutrients Control - Donovan's Nitrate Destroyer
Hello fellow reefers!. I have been in the hobby for more than 3 years, the first 2 years was tough. Cyno, diatom, nuisance algae, high NO3 (120ppm at one time) and ich/velvet. I have tried several nutrient control method (poor man, so most of it were DIY project). GFO, water fall scrubber...www.reef2reef.com
edit: my chamber 2 light is indeed a innovative marine chaetomax light.
