i come home today and 2 of my acans are recieding they never did this before all the water perm. are right on nothing has changed all the other corals are doing great

Ya know, I've had this happen myself a few times and I haven't been able to figure it out either. I'd suggest dipping them and if they continue to recede consider fragging them.

Really the only thing that has helped me was to move them to where the light was very low.

I don't believe anymore that acans mysteriously die. There is always a cause. You need to spend more time with your reef observing and experimenting. Sometimes, its a worm that only comes out at night. Sometimes, its amphipods at night. Sometimes, its a sponge that smothers acans. Could be an bacterial infection or a protozoan. The best advice I can give you is frag away any unhealthy portion. When you frag it away don't cut along the unhealthy and healthy boundary. Cut the healthy portion a lil in from the recession so you make sure the healthy polyps you seperated are totally healthy. I have asked questions like yours to many higher ups in the business. Word from Australia is frag out the bad polyps. Dipping with Melafix might be a good idea cuz it will expose any pests living in its skeleton, my extra .02.

Hope that helps. I can't stand to know acans are receeding. Lets get em healthy again!

That is what is so frustrating for me, SPS are so easy for me but acans have issues like this and I do not know what to do. Tried iodine dips to no avail.

thenkx rev and alpha i run carbon and phos im with alpha i think a shrimp or something is bothering it cause there is no unhealthy parts on it just receded i started noticeing it this morning when i went to work then when i came home they receded more but its not all of my acans this hobby is so aggravating but thankx to all the good people here i can keep things runnings

well i dipped the acans and moved them to the other side of the tank and they opened back up im just woundering if my cleaner shrimp was bothering them it only hangs out on the side i had the acans on i just hope they stay opens thankx agian for the support

some clarification, please:
- receding slowly with no color change to the polyps?
- receding slowly with paling or loss of color?
- receding quickly or ejecting polyp?

Any pics?

I have had some success with this problem by dipping in revive and melafix. If the skeleton is pink it is a bacterial infection and your best bet is to frag it. Most of mine that have receded just have a white skeleton and were better after dipping so aloha might be right about some kind of pest.
