Hey everyone. I bought a neptune DOS for kalk dosing and im being told that you need a peristaltic pump. The Dos looks like and seems to have to same mechanism as a peristaltic pump. Is there a difference and why is it no advised to use it to dose KALK

Thanks!

If you got the Neptune DOS, you dont need a peristaltic pump. The DOS is actually 2 peristaltic pump to dose 2 part. But it could be used to dose any liquid solution.
I have The DOS for 2 part and use a single Versa for Kalk.

I have 2 of the pumps.
I use 2 heads for Mag and Cal.
The other i wanna use for ALK and one for the liquid kalk from a reactor (yet to buy a reactor)

yup. Ive been advised against it. so im wondering if there will be any issues
Advised against it? Why?
I can see it if you dosed “with” the evap rate, but you can certainly figure out a average evaporation rate and dose short of that…IMO that is totally safe and prudent, if not advisable
Added: IMO a Neptune Dos is sort of overkill for dosing Kalk. Instead of spending almost $300, I might consider a cheap single head, dose 1/2 to 3/4 of your total at night and let your ATO pick up the balance…
Other strategies work just as well

I think it was more along the lines of the DOS not being able to take the corrosion and/or all day duty of the dosing.

Heck the DOS is designed exactly for continuous duty like water changes et…at least thats whats claimed…
Also the moving parts never actually get exposed to any liquids so if you use the recommended tubing you should be fine

The Dos is a peristaltic pump and will work for Kalkwasser. Mark your water level in the sump, figure out your ball park 24hr evaporation rate, check it daily for a few days and adjust if needed if it’s above or below that line. Higher evaporation rate in the winter vs summer.

TBH I might just have bad luck, but my dos units fail every year or two after warranty unfortunately. Their biggest flaw, in my experience, is the inside electrical components are not sealed well enough for being exposed to the humid environment under my tank. I’m on my last one then going a different direction for continuous dosing.

As the others have stated, the DOS is a dual head peristaltic pump design and can do the job.
I have an OG DOS which I used for water exchanges but the head design was junk and I had to replace them too frequently for my liking. I would second the suggestion for getting a less expensive single head unit to do the job.

I use the Neptune DOS to dose 30600 ml of Kalk a day and have been for at least 3 years. Zero issues. Its what its designed to do.
Same thing I do on my 500 gallon with a DOS QD, One DOS QD for ALK/CA and another with both heads for kalk pushing freshwater through a kalk reactor at night.

I use both heads set to 7ml min for the time allotted so that they run continuously during lights out. If you don't stick with 7/12/25 ml min it will run intermittently.

Whoever told the OP that using a DOS for kalk is not a good idea does not know what they are talking about. The DOS is a peristaltic pump just like any other, just more programable.

Does anyone know the lowest amount of mL per minute you can set the DOS to ?

For example the Kamoer peristaltic doser will go down to 1mL/ minute. I’m trying to set up kalk dosing for a 60 gallon system. Need the least amount per minute until corals really start growing.

It was probably someone not familiar with the dose. I've recommended not using pumps like kamoer dosers and readsea reef dose because the small tubing used clogs.

who said continuous drip. i guess i missed that

The question was Does anyone know
the lowest amount ml per minute
Oh sorry I should have clarified, I was referring to a continuous dosing rate. It was mentioned on this thread the DOS could do that.

Say I wanted to set it for 12 hours each night to continuously dose x amount of kalkwasser. How low can you set it to dose per minute at a non stop rate.
