Ok, need some opinion. Bought 40lbs of rock, I think way too much. Want a mixed reef tank, it is a 40 gallon cube. Here are a couple ideas I have, what are your thoughts? First set of pics are the tank and a aquascape that I think is too tall and too much space.

How tall is the scape and how tall is the tank?

I would say a lot depends on what you’re planning on keeping on those rocks and how that ties in with your lighting. Then factor in room for growth.

I don’t think it’s too much rock though.

Personally I like a full tank, basically the old fashioned rock wall, which can still be built with holes and arches. But tanks with one arch and nothing else is a little plain and empty looking IMO. Fish are just not going to swim in and out of that arch like people think. There should be caves to provide cover for the fish, hiding spaces are important.

I think you have a nice start so far but I would use much more rock myself. Good luck.

Put it in the tank and play around with it....I always end up doing it by how it fits and falls together and its never how imaged it or planned it but it always works out. I dont glue mine all together though. I like to be able to move it if needed for cleaning or killing off unwanted life. Just give yourself enough room to scrape the glass. If i had to pick one of those you scaped i would pick this one below. However you end up doing it. Its your own creation and it is what makes your reef unique. Are you going to use sand?

The tank is 21" tall, the scape at it highest point is 15.5". My light is a radion gen6.

That’s similar to how I scaped mine, except I have a mid section that adds a few caves w different entry exit points. I have a 32 gal and about 50-60 lbs of rock. I prefer the look of a mostly bare back on mine save a few rocks at the bottom. I think it adds a sense of depth. When I see smaller box tanks with the back wall filled, it always draws my attention to the tank itself and not what’s in it. But that’s just my opinion. Nothing wrong with either, just depends on your taste. I want my tank to look like reefs I’ve seen in the ocean. Maybe to some that could be a wreck with man made shapes, like squares which are rarely found in nature but I prefer to not bring notice to those shapes like a back wall.

For example, anytime I see a tank back wall covered in gsp, I just see the tank shape.

Here is what I have come up with so far. Still have 2 good size rocks leftover. Any suggestions?

New question. Is there enough room for a beneficial sand bed or should I decrease the foot print of the rock?

In my humble opinion, the quality of the rock is way more important than the "aquascape". I would make a fire pit out of the rock you currently have and get some "Real Ocean Live Rock". That's just me though. Real ocean live rock or... another cat.
