New fuval spec III startup

So found a fuval spec iii for cheap, currently upgrading the return pump and soaking the rock before starting the tank.

I have a fluval spec 2.5 gallon as my office betta tank and I think it would make a good reef aquarium if you're able to work around the tight space in the rear chamber. If it were me, I would probably fashion up some sort of HOB filter to go on the back and put a micro ATO, small heater, and maybe some carbon in a media bag in the main chamber. Right now my tank has a super small Tetra heater in it but it a fixed temp design that I don't believe would be good for a reeftank. The stock lighting would be good for nps corals but definitely not powerful enough for sustained photosynthesis (I'm having trouble growing low light plants with it).

I so far love the 6g fluval edge (will need to replace light). I use a 38Par bulb or two with a makeshift stand from black pvc. Works and looks nice. I also have the Fluval Evo 5g. Love the look and ease. Both these tanks are very different to look at.

6g edge you have one long side and two short. The 5 evo has two long and one short. Just for reference.

Oh, cleaning the 6g can be a a real pain if you let algae build up on sides. I have a spare 6g edge that I swap out when needed. I do this because I bring it to classrooms for kids to view, so need nice and clean all the time.

So your just running a HOB for the filtering?

Actually that is for the classroom traveling only. At home I run a hang on back or protein skimmer or hook it up to my larger system. For the past few months I have been running just a hang on back with live rock, sponge and carbon. I do water changes (like 90%) once a week. Been working nicely.

Some of the animals will be moved to the larger system after presentations to keep bioload down a bit and to make sure they have enough to eat (urchin).

Why not just run a canister filter and put the media in there? They are super easy to clean. Use it as your source of water changes. Dump the canister, rinse it out and refill .

I'll vote for Imagitarium 3.7G. Awesome tank, and throw in a AquaClear30 HoB filter, Rio+90 return pump and a Kessil A80.

you can run chemipure blue which has both carbon, gfo and purigen in HoB filter. Unless you want to use it as refugium, ac30 will work, else go for bigger hob filter like ac70

So in the AC70 (modded) I can use floss in the basket with chemipure blue and purigen and then run a chaeto reactor in the stand for more filtration. What about a mangrove plant?

h80 is for chaeto, a80 for display. Very good light. But very lowe power, only good for 5G or less size
