New maxima clam not opening fully

Hi all,

I got a small maxima clam January 27th that seemed really healthy. Recently, about the last week, it doesnt seem to be opening all the way. It is still reactive to light. All other inhabitants are looking fine. I was wondering if any of you had any input? Attached are photos, i will get water parameters in the morning (2/21/19) and post those as an edit. I did a larger water change today, just in case.

The fourth photo is of another maxima I have which is getting some great growth, just as a reference.

It looks like it is a squamosa. Where did you purchase it? I'm not seeing any new growth so the clam could have in bad shape before you bought it. The larger maxima looks healthy so I wouldn't make too many changes af this point.

Based on its byssal opening im pretty sure its a maxima. What features indicate squamosa to you?

I got it at a frag swap, is it a bit too soon to see new growth in my tank? I realize there should probably be a white edge on the shell to show there is growth of any kinda, but i dont see that and didnt think to check when i purchased it.

The shell and width of the mantle, scutes. Squamosa can have incurrent siphons with no tentacles. Hope it comes around for you. A healthy clam will always have new growth on it. Doesn't mean it can't come around though.

Thank you again for your input. Unfortunately i woke up to the little bugger retracted and not attached to his shell. Seems the great aquarium in the sky gained another inhabitant today...

Thank you. As soon as the lights come on and its obvious that this is not just some nighttime fluke (wishful thinking, when clams look like this its a one way trip) ill remove it and do a large water change and test parameters. My larger clam looks great still, so at least theres that

Sorry for the loss. A clam that small might not even register a parameter swing so you might not need a large water change. Glad the other clam is doing well.

Good point, however, it is a 10 gallon. So ill still do one just in case. I got it out before much decomposition started and it honestly didnt even smell bad. The mantle was still there, but internal organs were obviously necrotic and there was no shell control.

Hi all, just a follow up. Pinched mantle seems to be the culprit. Just yesterday my larger maxima was displaying symptoms and today i woke up to a gaping intake siphon, limp mantle and no photo sensitivity. Tank is now clamless unfortunately...
