Hi, I added a new porcupine puffer to my tank a few days ago. He hasn’t eaten (which I know happens sometimes especially when just added) however today he started laying on the floor and I noticed whiteish spots on his fins. I’m not 100% sure why it’s happening or what the cause is. Does anyone have any idea on what to do?

All I can make out is what is on the fins either fin ray issue or lymphocystis but to best determine, this image(s) are really dark. Please repost and even add video of at least 20 seconds under bright white light intensity, no blue please
Is fish breathing normal or labored?
How did you acclimate and for how long?

These fish commonly carry marine ich. As mentioned, we need clear photos taken under white lights for a more sure diagnosis…..but this looks like it is probably ich.

Your best option for treatment would be hyposalinity (without any invertebrates present). Coppersafe works better, but you’d need a bare treatment tank to do that.

I drip acclimated for about an hour. I cannot tell if his breathing is labored.

I see early signs of ich and there are two ways you can go. If fish relaxed and eating, you can do hyposalinity dropping salt level to 1.009 or Coppersafe (my preferred) for a full 30 days at 2.25ppm monitored with a Hanna Brand copper test kit and monitoring ammonia level also with a reliable test kit. Add air stone with either treatment method

Is there a way to treat my whole tank for ick? I have other fish and I’m wondering if it’s a tankwide thing seeing as how he wasn’t infected the few weeks he was at my lfs. My tank has corals, fish, and inverts. What can I do to treat the whole tank?

They too should be treated as they too are exposed and best accomplished in a separate tank. Corals and inverts can remain in display tank which should be fishless (fallowa0 for 6-8 weeks

I have 2 clarkii clowns and a snowflake eel. Is there any precaution I should take with medicines in a 30 gallon qt tank?

I agree - that looks like ich to me as well. Hyposalinity is well tolerated by puffers and clownfish. The eel can handle hypo better than they can handle high doses of copper (that can make them go off feed temporarily).

Is it possible that one of the other fish somehow gave it to him without them having any symptoms? Cause there has been ich in my tank prior (like a year ago) but nothing since then. Could it be that it’s just still in the tank somehow through the eel or clowns with no symptoms or is it just a puffer thing?

@vetteguy53081 Would you be able to send me link for the YouTube version please I can’t seem to find it. I’ve not really managed to figure out how this forum works if I’m totally honest. I generally just silently scroll but this Ich has me intrigued

Look at the images - see the diffuse white spots on the clear dorsal and anal fins? That’s how ich looks like on this species.
