Hey guys, thought I might document this adventure.

So backstory; Purchased two gig's from an online vender whom I've used over the past 10 years, one purple and one blue. The purple one went downhill overnight and I couldn't save it. That being said I dont blame the vender at all, as these guys simply dont do shipping well and it feels like a roll of the dice..... This second one was healthy, but after a week in the display began to inflate and deflate, and expel its internals. Every day it was deflating around the same time, 4/5pm (only for a few hours) and would inflate back and look healthy. That made me delay this process as I was really hoping it would rebound on its own, (I know how intense Cipro is so even more hesitant). Unfortunately its now seemingly deflated more so then inflated and appears to getting progressively worse. It does have a quality reaction to touch, as it is sticky. Interesting side note, after touching the anemone it often looks more like a typical S.Gig with strong folds and a closed mouth, its almost like touch stimulates or wakes it back up.

I've completed Cipro treatments over the years with varying results, to include one of the documentations on ReefCentral in 2013 as part of OrionN original write up.

I was hesitant in pulling the trigger, removing this new specimen for treatment because I haven't been successful with the last 3 gigs I put through the process.. so fingers crossed. Prior to the last three failed attempts, I've been successful with an H.Mag and about 4 S.Gigs over the years.

Set up:
  • 10 gallon AIO lifeguard aquatics tank (next to my DT so I can make the water changes easily)
  • Upgraded Sicce return
  • heater
  • Kessil 150
  • HOB skimmer, no collection cup, for oxygenation.
  • Media tray with filter floss to clean out any expelled gunk over the day.

I have the anemone in the tank with a rock from the display currently and Ill put the Cipro in tonight when the lights are off around 6 or 7 pm.

Anemone looks purple in the pictures, but that's because I was using an orange lens to take photos with, which filters out blue. The last pic is what was sent from the vender

Amen to that ...it's usually not the vendor...I know one vendor that ships with small pellets of activated carbon in the bag (supposed to ease shipping stress) ..I think they should use a piece of polyfilter instead ..that would absorb waste .. any thoughts ?

Ive seen with some carbon before which seems to at least make the water clearer. The larger the anemones are it seems the worse they do during shipping.. Simply expell so much waste water into that small bag and end up nuking themselves overnight.

I would be curious about the polyfilter and if there would be any side effects of it physically touching the anemone.

Alright first dose, a bit later then I intended but 250mg @ 830pm

  • First picture is prior to lights out. You can see it expelling waste on its own prior to antibiotic.
  • Second and third pic are the waste removed
  • Fourth pic is immediately after 250mg dosage
  • Fifth pic is 30 mins after treatment. Gaping mouth, no real form to itself. (this is why I hate doing Cipro, It always look so much worse immediately). Such a hard concept to get behind. I do know after multiple day it should start looking better

best of luck! I'm putting a gig through treatment as well; interesting that you say they generally look worse before they look better. I noticed that usually right after I add cipro, the gigs/mags tend to look better with their mouths closing.

The last photo is a haddoni. The red lips are indicative of haddoni.

Good luck! It's definitely gig season now--I'm hoping most of them pull through.

5:00pm update. Anemone has been spewing out a milky substance all day and has clouded the tank. Will be completing the first water change here shorty.

Upon coming home I find a nuked tank... this guy isn't making it easy....

Photos are before WC and after. A ton of internals being expelled.

Silver lining... anemone is crazy sticky.. caught my hand and broke off some peices sticking too it.

Not giving up yet still life in this one...
