Sounds a silly question but I'm moving from freshwater discus to saltwater...

Do you need to add water conditioner to RO water (Seachem Prime)

Or is it safe to use straight from the RO filter. Also do I need to add anything to the filtered water, obviously apart from salt? I won't be adding any corals or fish until the tank is cycled

You don't have to add anything to the "RODI" water other that the salt.
You can add bacteria to help cycle the tank faster.
Also there are different types of salt depending on what you will be putting in the tank later.
Get a good refractometer instead of a cheap hydrometer. It will be worth it.
There is plenty of great advice on this forum. And great people to answer questions if you can't find the answer by looking.

Welcome to R2R

Do you only have an RO filter or do you have a RO/DI filter?

Reason I am asking if you are going with fish only the the RO with some prime will be fine

If you are going reef then you will need a RO/DI filter and you will not need prime.

I haven't bought anything yet, I'm still breaking down my discus tank.

I was looking at the RODI unit and using Instant Ocean salt.

However, I've had advice from other saltwater people, as I'm not using a sump (yet), I was advised to get a HOB protein skimmer... But is this necessary at the beginning?

My intention was to get the RODI unit, sand, rock, salt, power heads, cycle the aquarium for the required time, then start off adding fish gradually then once I'm capable of keeping the fish then look at corals - then add the skimmer probably a couple months in...

Any recommendations on what to put in the FLUVAL FX6 external - it's currently running freshwater with sponge, ceramic media and alfragrog
