New to Saltwater

Hi,

I just purchased a 55 gal tank that was used as a salt tank. It has a wet dry sump the previous owner used but I'm going to get rid of it and make a new sump with a skimmer and refug I think that will be a much better setup. Any advice or tip would be appreciated.

Welcome Olaro ! We can certainly help You get your 55 setup& going. What type of overflow do You have ?

My plan is to use the dry sump as my first stage and get a 10 gal as my second stage sump. I will remove the bio balls and put in some bio plates, and install a skimmer then drill the current sump and install a drain pipe that feeds the 10 tank where ill have my refug and return pump. The problem I have on doing one large sump is the with of my stand its only 11in wide and I don't want to spend the money on a custom sump when I have so much more the buy like a RO/DI system. Whats everybody's opinion on my return setup that is there now. I believe the 1in tube is glued into the bulkhead.

Buy a refractometer. Eheim Jager heaters work well. I can’t stress this enough, buy a ro/di unit ASAP. Do not fill the tank with tap water. Think about the finished product, what you see in three or five years, and buy the right product so you don’t have to repurchase and upgrade. There is nothing wrong with good clean used gear, most of my stuff was lightly used second hand.
