I snapped a few new shots today with my Nikon D610, 200mm f/4 macro, and Avast Marine extra-long top-down porthole.

Great Shots. 200mm F4 seems to be a great lense. do you find it too long for aquarium shots?

Its length only poses a challenge for top-down shots. I have the Avast XL porthole, so that adds another 7” to the length. That means you need a really tall tripod and a step ladder to get in position to see through the viewfinder. Also, corals near the top of the tank are not within the focus working distance. I’m talking with Avast about custom ordering an even longer porthole so I can get the lens further from the corals while still having the porthole submerged to get around this focus issue.

I shoot the majority of my photos through the tank glass, and there the lens length isn’t an issue.

Thanks for all the info.
Longer porthole might be tricky as u might endup seing the cylindre in the picture with the lens that high in it?
I struggled with the same and end up using a Tamron 17-50 which can focus at 30 cm only.
One other thing u can try is to add a 12 or maybe a 16 mm extension tube that would allow the lens to focus much closer and will give u even more magnification...
Anyway excellent shots.

That's awesome!!! I can't wait to try it out. FYI, I'm leaving for Paris with my wife for our anniversary on Tuesday, so I won't have a chance to post any new photos until I return May 1st.

Thank you so much!

Dan, thank you so much for the new giant porthole! It's perfect. Here are some quick shots I took with it today (not my best work...I just got back from 23 hours of travel and little sleep, but couldn't wait to try it). I'll post more once I recover from the jet lag.
