Hello all! I apologize for the long story below but I need some advice.

I am about 7 months new to salt water fish keeping but I have had freshwater aquariums since i was a kid. Anyway, I am having some issues with temperature in my aquarium. The details:

I got my set up used 40 gal acrylic with a ton of live rock, live sand, mating pair of clown fish and clean up crew. Other equipment: AquaticLife LED light (no model number or details on it at all), Aquatop circulation pump, Aqueon 75 hang on the back filter and a Aquatop 400 canister filter. I do 5-10% water changes about every 2 weeks. I will be building a refugum and protein skimmer in the coming weeks.

I seemed to get the hang of salt water fish so I bought a watchman goby, more clean up crew, and a bubble tip (at different times) and all seemed to thrive for about 1 month. Wow was the anemone pretty but there were days when it looked amazing and others not so good. One day it started looking a little gloomy and went a little down hill for a week. I had the water checked and the ocean salt water changes completely decreased the pH. I bought Red Sea salt and an Icecap digital refractometer which also measures temperature to mix my own salt water for water changes. Since then pH and other parameters are awesome, except for the temperature (and possibly specific gravity since well, they are related). Also, it is good to note that supposedly the icecap automatically adjusts specific gravity for temperature. And well, that's kind of a big deal for obvious reasons, duh.

There is a heater in the aquarium but it is turned of unless outside temp gets below 75. Temperature in my home is consistently 76-78F. If I check the temperature of water that has been sitting in a bucket then the temperature is usually 77F with the IceCap. If I use aquarium glass thermometer on bucket water, temperature measures 74F. Now here is what is throwing me off, when I use IceCap to check the temperature in aquarium, it is consistently 81.4F or so. If i use glass thermometer on aquarium water temp is 77F. I checked the glass and Icecap thermometers (and specific gravity measurements) at LFS against their icecap and it was pretty much spot on for both SG and T. Glass temp=Icecap temp at the store. So now what the heck? Why is my temperature reading off. The LFS suggested I trust the Icecap.

This has also (possibly) been throwing off my salinity since higher temperature means higher specific gravity. I was mixing my water for water changes to about 1.025 with icecap. When a different LFS used Milwaukee on my (at ROOM TEMP) salt water, they measured 1.028. (:0). So now I mix my salt water to 1.022-1.023.

But i am still dumbfounded as to why there is a 3 degree difference in temperature between glass thermometer and Icecap. The filters and water pump are cool to touch but is it possible for them to transfer 3 degrees F worth of heat to the water? Maybe adding a refugum would not only help water quality but also help to bring the temperature down a little bit?

Parameters were much easier to manage before the anemone. I doubt the anemone will bounce back at this point but I would like to try again after I figure this stuff out. Or maybe there is nothing to figure out and everything is fine? But then why did my anemone die with such perfect water parameters. Specific gravity and temperature are the only thing I can think of but not sure how to approach.

Thank you

Welcome to R2R!!

This may sound simple, I let my controller control my temperature by switching on the outlet and off. Most of the heaters with internal sensors are not accurate or the digital read outs that some sell on the side. Another suggestion is to place your heater in a high flow area to distribute the warming of the heater.

Welcome to R2R. Measurement tools that are hobby grade can actually be way more inaccurate than you would hope for. Here is an interesting video from BRS where they test the accuracy and range for heaters.

I am no expert and maybe someone can enlighten me, I do not understand how an aquarium that size could be be that much warmer than the ambient temp.

I am wondering if either 1) your tank is in direct sunlight, or 2) the room your tank is in is way warmer than where your thermostat is, so you are getting a false idea of ambient temp or 3) (probably a factor either way) your measurement tools are inaccurate.

Obviously gear can heat up the tank, but I can't imagine the LED doing that much. The ambient temp in my house is always around 76 degrees. I run 2 Kessil 160we lights and my heaters are pretty much always kicking on.

I choose to go a different route than most reefers. I run my tank at 80 degrees, most choose 78. I went with 80 because my research indicates that most hobby grade tools have a +/- of 3 degrees, this way I know I am in the range of 77-83 which a common range of temps. Once you get below 76 that is getting a little on the cold side long term.

Welcome to r2r!! I get a degree or 2 of difference from my thermometer in the tank compared to my hanna temp/salinity checker. The probe for the thermometer is lower in the tank so I just chalk it up to that :D

Like yourself, I use the air conditioning to keep my tank cool. I keep our house set at 78 degrees during the day and at night, down to 71 degrees. I have a ceiling fan on in the room that the tank is in 24/7

Edit: My system stays at 78.3 to 78.5 year round:)

In this situation I would order a couple additional different quality thermometers, and compare notes on the temp readings on all of them. Get rid of the one that is deviating. Seems like a waste of money but may be worth the few extra dollars to save you some frustration and the urge to change things unnecessarily. I have a glass thermometer and a digital one on my tank, to make sure I am getting accurate readings.

If your temp is still high try increasing surface agitation and blow a fan across the water for evaporative cooling.

@ccombs:
1. tank is in dark room with curtains drawn all day
2. I dont think the room is warmer - AC has direct vent into this room. I live in a small apartment however heat is usually the problem as I live in Florida.
3. tools inaccurate --> possible... will pick up some different thermometers to play around a little bit.

BRS video very good at explaining details --> basically it tells me not to trust my thermometer and triple check everything. I wish cash wasnt a problem (says most people). But the range of acceptable temperature is higher than i expected... most places say 78F but if max is 83 then i feel a little better with my 81F.

The only way this can be is if the place you are taking readings in your tank is not the same for each device. Such as middle of the tank for the glass one and on the glass for the icecap. Or in front of a powerhead and not in front of a powerhead.

Temperature is taken in the same spot when comparing.
