Noisy MP60 - What do you think?

I've been in contact with Ecotech about the noise of my MP60. The pump is freakin awesome but this one is making a ton of noise. I am pretty confident they will fix the problem

What do you think?

Have u tried moving the motor aroundon the glass? Sometimes while doing that it will make better contact with the impeller and quiet it down some

You know that sounds pretty normal. Mine sounded like that initially, they tend to quiet down a bit after a week or so. Have you have a mp40 to compare with?

I don't think it sounds too bad either. What power (percentage wise) do you have it set on? Mine can make a bit of noise when they get up around 80 percent. But are pretty quiet otherwise. It doesn't bother me at 80 percent - but I do notice it. Price we pay to move that much water! lol

I have to admit, that actually sounds pretty typical of the vortechs. Heck I am surprised it makes that little noise... makes me think my MP10 is loud! ;)

I dunno, I have it on about 3/4 power right now. I can hear it all the way upstairs...distinctly. I don't think it should be that loud, I can't really hear the motor pulsing, just the raspy noise of the fan. It had been running exactly 24 hours when the video was taken.

I tried moving it all around but nothing really helped.

I have stood next to 6 MP40s on a 300g tank before - all I noticed was the humming noise they made, this is the fan or something, as I don't even hear the hum of the motor.

The sound you are hearing is not the low hum of the motor spinning the impeller, I think it's the fan hitting something. In addition, the noise does not dissipate as you hear in the video as I go to the side of the tank, it's just as loud 10 ft away. I used a tiny camera which probably has a tiny sound sensor.

Yeah that doesnt sound normal. I have an MP10 and i can hear the pulsing from the motor but it is very low and barely can be heard from the couch 10 feet away. Have you moved the dryside around for a better contact? Have you opened the wetside to see if anything is in the way?

The MP60's are definitely louder than the MP10, 20, and 40. They move way too much water to be dead silent. Like you said, it has a built in fan. Sometimes, if the cord is at a weird angle on the MP60's, it will "rub" against the fan (the MP60's are the the only Vortechs with fans built into the dryside). Have you tried moving the cord slightly to see if that stops the sound? That's the only thing I can think of that may be causing excessive sound. But there is no way to make a noise comparison between the 60's and other models (60's are def louder).

The sound you hear is from the motor. It doesn't sound too bad to me, but it's always hard to judge sound from a video. They can take a little while to break in and are more noisy than regular pumps.

I have tried moving the cord around, if I press it forward it makes a worse noise. I took Ecotech's suggestion and moved the dry side around and running only the motor part.

Silent for one person may not be silent for another. The mp60s have a distinct sound compared to the mp40s. Its more of a high pitched sound. Like I said I have 2 mp60s and 4 mp40s and that sounds normal to me. I could hear mine on from my bedroom when I first got them.

Yeah they make noise but I run mine around 60 percent there not really loud at all.... My mp40s were full blast they made some noise!!!! Like Craig said the wire might be rubbing the fan if it's real loud.... If I put mine on steady flow it's almost dead silent put them on reef crest like they currently are you can hear them race up and down but nearly as bad as my 40s were....

Thanks for your input Troylee. I really hope I can get this fixed because I LOVE this pump. It makes an empty aquarium with water and sand exciting lol.

I got a hold of Tim from Ecotech...showed him the video, I am having the dry side replaced as there is some sort of problem (he didn't specify exactly what was causing the extra noise).

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get this resolved? Mine does the same thing. I called Ecotech and they were excellent to deal with. Sent me a replacement and a prepaid shipping slip to send mine back. I have 2.... one was silent and the other was loud. That's how I knew that the noise wasn't normal.

I've had the dryside replaced 3 times now and it's noisy each time, maybe it's not as bad but I still think it's way too loud.

Uh oh. I just went through it this morning. Haven't gotten my new dryside yet. Now your making me nervous.
Strange, because my other one is perfectly silent.

I have an in wall tank and I can even hear the loud one when on the OTHER side of the wall. I'm hoping the replacement is quieter.

They're all too loud. I had two of those in my old 156g, and it was Hades on Earth! I could hear it upstairs, mind you--- I had wood floors, so the sound tended to travel.

You simply can't beat that flow and undertow, though! They are amazing pumps, but definitely for the "in-wall" build, IMO.

Thought I'd quickly mention that I received my replacement dry side on Thursday and it is incredibly more quiet than my old one. I am very pleased with it.
