Hello all. I am at my wits end trying to compromise with my wife about these lights. I originally wanted to mount them at their proper height around 10 inches. She wants our canopy to stay. I basically had to take the mounting hardware and kinda jimmy rig it so that it actually fits with the canopy. At this moment it is 3 inches above water. If I make a diy bar to go across the entire tank, I could potentially make it 6 inches AT MOST.

I am using Animalbeans settings for mixed reef which uses about 50% power for the blues at most. My question is, will I be okay? Can I just lower the power down per light spectrum even more?

I am not worried about the spread, I have basically 2 major locations where I plan on having most of my coral and they are pretty much directly under where the lights are currently mounted.

What if you ran a strip across the top of the canopy and mounted them to that?

Or is the canopy closed top?

Lower power? Depends on the par your expecting to need. What kind of tank is this gonna be?

What about a taller canopy??

Maybe its just me, but a canopy turns into a shelf before too long... is this the point???

She wants exactly this canopy. We don't put anything on top of it. Its a mixed reef, I have my softies near the sand bed and a few acros on top of the highest rocks. Everything seems to be good so far I just didn't want any issues for the future. She will not get a different canopy or remove this one. Happy wife happy life I guess

Its a closed top. Even if I open the lid I can only get access to frobt of tank which will leave the back completely dark

Canopies are really quite easy to build DIY. Aquarium stands themselves not so much. I’m not sure what color the stain is or is your stand and canopy painted black? You really could build a 12 to 14 inch high canopy quite easily. Lots and lots of suggestions on YouTube. I’ve built many over the years. That way you could keep your wife happy and have much better light spread from these lights. Also would give more air circulation and keep your tank cooler. Just a thought.

I’ve seen holes cut in the top of the canopy so the lights can breath. I have these lights too and would worry about heat. I like the spread but might add one more and then dial them down from 50%. You might not need to though. You’ll need to get some par readings. Is there a local club that lends out a meter?
