I bought this twin-mouth Scolymia cubensis a few years back for $80.00 This thing was under low intensity actinic lights in the shop I bought it from. It was bright gold at the time. I run more whites in my tank, and it has turned into a more orange color. I nearly killed it twice, due to ammonia and alkalinity spikes. Its one of the most resilient coral I've had, far far harder to kill than the pacific scolies you see more commonly on the market. Not sure if it has a morph name.

December 2017
This picture was right after an alkalinity spike. It receded from its skeleton about 1/4 of the way. I thought for sure it was toast. But it eventually recovered with weekly feedings and moving it to a corner on the bottom.

At this point I'll stop posting updates on this scolymia cubensis unless something big happens. He doesn't seem to change much.

Really interesting transformations of this tank. I see from the LFS list you must be in the South Florida area

Nice tank. I’m down in miami. Any lfs’s you’d recommend in your area?
Check out this google maps link. It's got most Saltwater stores in miami-Dade, Broward, Palm beach, Martin and some in hillsborough County. I update it now and again, as new shops show up and old ones close down.

JF Jack-o-lantern Leptoseris. I've been told it is near impossible to kill this coral, that its similar to green star polyp. But I almost did, haha. I had it for a number of months before it started to bleach and then undergo tissue loss. This was my fault as I put it way too high up in the tank right after I increased my light intensity. I thought it was a lost cause, but I forgot about it. Nearly a year after it was, "dead" I noticed a single polyp! One sole polyp had survived. I will continue to document its growth.

Wowwwww this is awesome. Thank you so much. I’ve been to about half of these but there’s a few that definitely look intriguing that I’ll visit in the next few weeks. So far strictly fish is my favorite, and ocean view is probably second.

Montipora setosa. Got this coral as a well encrusted plug, yet things f'd up on my end pretty quick. A year after that bleaching event where I nearly lost the whole thing, I finally noticed some new growth. It is one of the slowest growing montipora's I've observed. My superman monti is growing extremely well. I bought both around the same time, and the superman has spread nearly 4 times its size in the same amount of time.

Montipora sp. "superman"
Something to note....This coral was bought with an extremely bumpy skeleton texture initially (think tropic thunder or JF Slow burn) . Over time it has completely smoothed out. I'm hoping it will go back to being bump as it matures, as it was a great texture to look at. This frag was bought around the same time at the montipora setosa. It has suffered a lot abuse, from bleaching and tissue loss to temperature swings. However it is nearly impossible to kill imo. I couldn't decide to keep it in one spot over time, but each time I relocated the main frag, a small piece was left behind in the original placement. So I have 4 separate colonies of the same individual spreading on my rockwork. I'll mostly focus on the biggest colony at this time.

The OG frag. The plug had some growth on it, so I snipped it off and placed it on the rocks. Notice that bumpy texture!

A peculiar thing has happened. Now that the colony has grown to a pretty good size (and that it can't spread outwards, only upwards) it has developed its weird bump texture again!.

August 2021 Update.

Well my AC crapped out during a week in July. The temps rose up to 86~87 f throughout the day, and somewhere in the upper 70's at night. Surprisingly, no-one was affected by it. If anything they liked it. About two weeks later I noticed that I had rock flower anemone babies all over the sandbed near one of my three adult flowers. I've seen about 15 of them so far. Hopefully they color up, because dam...they are ugly as all hell right now.
20210803_080643.jpg
The stock pump on the Innovative Marine Nuvo 20 tank crapped out on me finally, after 7 years of abuse on and off. Replaced it today with a Sicce Syncra 0.5. IT's shockingly quite now. *so peaceful*
20210806_150521.jpg
New additions include an Aquaman montipora for $11 Check out @ChaosAquaculture for a good deal on their $5 Friday auctions. I hope it colors up an takes over as fast as my reverse superman does.
20210719_153958.jpg
After a month of debate, I fragged my 4 year old Duncanopsammia. It has grown from a three head frag the size of my pinky joint, to the size of my fist with 30+plus heads. I'll be posting them in marketplace once they are healed up nicely.

Acro update

unknown fuzzy acro from Blue Earth Farms corals.

I got this guy because it had crazy polyp extension during the day at the LFS. The staff were not sure if it had a specific name or if it was a wild mariculture nub they got earlier in the year.

Well it finally happened. I can consider myself a success in reefing as I have fragged 6+ species of corals and managed to make profit off em. That said, I had to make frags since I'm running out of room in the tank. Most recent was my Valentine's Day Massacre. Its getting ready to overtake a nearby acro. I removed the original frag plug off the rock, along with 8+ polyps. I put a blank frag plug in its place for more VDM to grow back over.

Before I did any removal.
20210904_112104.jpg

Blasted the rock top rediscover the original frag plug.
20210904_112124.jpg

Removed plug.
20210904_112223.jpg

Inserted blank plug

One week later

And my frag is looking well.

I really enjoy these progression photos, you’ve done a great job documenting these! I’m amazed how corals can seemingly be DOA and then bounce back given the time and stability. Never count a coral out!

I really enjoy these progression photos, you’ve done a great job documenting these! I’m amazed how corals can seemingly be DOA and then bounce back given the time and stability. Never count a coral out!
Thanks! I love looking at time lapse videos of corals, so I thought I should keep of record of mine too. My reverse superman monti is doing a little TOO well imo.

Had an issue over the weekend. My coralvue icecap ato was shut off for several days due to a glitch in the ato itself. I will be replacing it eventually tho. The dam thing has failed 4+ times in a year, and each time I sent it back for warranty repairs. Yeesh. Topping off manually for now.

Monthly update.

I replaced the Coralvue icecap ATO with a JBJ Nano ATO before leaving on a 2 week trip...Unfortunately the JBJ Nano ATO failed completely at some point while I was gone. I lost a few good ones, my aquaman monti, my recovering jack-o-lantern leptoseris, and some valentines day massacres. Everyone else looks either ok, or browned out (see the updated post on my JF slowburn montipora). I called Coralvue their faulty equipment, and they offered a discount on a future product purchase. Not what I'm looking for, but whatever. I returned the JBJ Nano to my LFS where I bought it. I need to buy a controller for this tank, me thinks. Someone recommend me a better ATO for an IM 20 fusion lagoon sized tank, pretty please.

During the trip and the failed ATO issue, I developed a moderately bad red slime problem. I've dosed red slime remover, and will follow up with a vibrant bacteria dosage in a few days.

On a better note, I found a seller of red hornet zoanthids! I lost my last ones due to an ammonia spike at one point.
I'm hoping they will do well, as my blue hornets look fabulous right now.

November 2021 Update (PC rainbow Acro)

Tank is dealing with some red slime since last months ATO failure. I dosed a little Vibrant bacteria to help compete for nutrients.

Growth progression pictures are of a PC Rainbow Frag I snagged at Reef-A-Palooza Orlando via blank vendor.

August 2022. It was looking real good until I moved and tried introducing a Yellow clown goby (coral eater).

September 2022 (Still recovering from being a snack for the clown goby, as well as an alkalinity drop. Seriously slow tissue recession in a small part, but the rest is growing. Very peculiar).

November 2022 Definite increase in health and coloration after a dip in Melafix. I notice Acropora Eating Flatworms (AEFW) earlier in the month and have begun treatment, see later posts).
