-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After being without a tank for a couple years following a move from Japan back to the states and subsequently from the west coast to the east coast to take a job after retiring from the Marine Corps, it was time to bring some peace to my little corner of the house.

We still had the equipment from the setup in Okinawa (a 50g rimless) but I wanted to move up to something a bit bigger without breaking the bank. I found a used 75g tank, stand, and canopy in the paper and though the tank was trash, the stand and canopy was nice so we brought it home.

20150221_160236_zps454zhq8m.jpg

I cut a 3/4" piece of birch plywood to enclose the top of the stand and layed down a few coats of Red Guard to protect the wood. I repeated the process on the lower two inches of the inside surface of the stand and applied some white paint. Progress was a bit slow but we were moving forward and things were turning out fairly nice along the way. As luck would have it, the sump from the previous setup in Japan fit the new (used) stand.

With the stand finished up, I gave the canopy the same treatment (Red Guard and white paint).

While waiting for various things to arrive, I used 1/2" (O.D.) PVC to mock up some rock like structures to get a feel for what I'd do for the aqua-scaping.

20150216_144719_zpsrbz3thuq.jpg

Once the rock arrived I attempted to mimic the PVC layout; meh...

Now it was time to figure out how I was going to plumb the tank. I had a hang on overflow to match the sump but I really wanted to run a beananimal setup. After doing some digging I decided to try one of the "stealth" units available online and took a stab at drilling a tank for the first time. The process was relatively painless and went without incident (why did I wait almost 25 years to drill a tank when it was this easy).

At this point, the build is placed on hold for a little over a year while we move into a home with a lot more square footage. After staking my claim, I started moving things around to accommodate the tank and got to work on the plumbing.

Time to clean up a repair made by the previous owner and tidy up some other things.

While this was going on, a used skimmer was purchased along with some cheap LEDs I modified a bit to work with the controller.

Things moved along as expected but that rockwork was still bugging me so I made some minor changes to open it up and bit.

Fast forward a bit and it's time to add more critters.

Grr, that time again...

Things move along as expected and for the most part is drama free for a number of months.

After about four months, I decided to swap the cheap LEDs in favor of a pair of Kessils.

Time to replace that ugly old skimmer.

30586739875_d9e6cba7b9_b.jpg

Approximately six months after starting up the tank, things start to go down hill; I notice a number of corals fading in color after returning home from a work trip. I had also changed maintenance procedures on the tank prior to this and things are going downhill quickly.

This monti is actually coming back at this point and looked far worse; I had little hope of saving it and other corals were worse.

31826811535_b92e3e2172_b.jpg

Two months later it has almost completely recovered after running into another setback involving a heater failure.

32885228642_8e4e63ff60_h.jpg

Three months later you'd never know the hell I put it through.

33495053816_763b041eae_b.jpg

During the two dark periods noted above I lost a RR Wolverine, Copps Rainbow undata, Cali tort, and another acropora that wasn't in good shape when I got it (broken piece that had been laying in the sand of another reefers tank that I got as a freebie).

It was a tough blow to my pride and it really sucked being responsible for killing all the above. On the plus side, that little unknown acro frag that was once laying in the sand and which I had written off as dead had one tiny spot of flesh up near the tip (rest of the bare skeleton and been covered in algae) that had actually survived and was coming back from the dead at a rapid rate!

32919551314_41afa9e012_b.jpg

11 months after initial setup, I was able to borrow a PAR meter (Apogee MQ510 with full spectrum sensor) from the local group. The lights are mounted five inches above the water, color is set to 65%, and intensity is at 39% (my current program maxes at 40%).

34304155366_5ee1ab18e9_o.jpg

Today, things are still going really well. The tank was initially filled 30 May 2016 and has been running just short of 11 months now (26 June 2017). This past weekend I made the decision to go predominantly SPS and have re-homed a number of corals to make room for some new guys.

Look'n good!
I like the black sand in your tank. It works well with the rest of your set-up.
I'm glad everything was able to bounce back for the most part! We've all had our rough patches, so I know how disheartening it can be.

How do you like your skimmer? I've been looking at getting a deltec myself. Would you recommend it?

About a week and a half ago I was ready to take it outside and smash it to bits! Up until about two months ago it had been absolutely amazing; it is extremely simple to disassemble and clean, super consistent in performance, and has just been a pleasure to own but all the sudden it wouldn't hold a tune. Since I keep it very clean I figured the pump and/or impeller was on the way out so I ordered a pair of replacements. The pump arrived within a couple days but that didn't correct the issue so I waited for the impeller, and waited... and waited some more. The impeller was ordered 9 May and arrived 23 June. I was just about to order a new skimmer since availability of parts just wasn't adequate to continue using the Deltec at that point (while I was waiting for the first impeller, I had ordered another from a retailer in Germany that hasn't arrived yet). Now that it is back to its awesome self and working great, I'll continue to use and recommend Deltec to anyone that wants a fantastic performing skimmer. Availability is the only concern one should have when going with a Deltec but with that said, Marine Depot has recently become a distributor of Deltec so things may be looking way up for current and future Deltec owners.

Nice tank and nice racing chair. How do you take all those amazing pictures?

The pictures were taken with a combination of a Galaxy S7 and a Pentax K-r. I recently replaced the S7 with an LG G6 and its camera lacks the range of the S7 (e.g. white balance maxes out at 7500k vs the S7 at 10000k which captured nice shots without any post processing). I'm looking at replacements for the K-r at the moment as well.

If you need any help with cameras shoot me a message or ask me on here. I have used my fair share of new cameras

Added a Kessil H80 to the refugium today. Light creep has been cut way down from the CFLs so hopefully maintenance in the skimmer compartment is a little bit easier in the future.

Few more new guys from yesterday.

I cant get a decent angle of the undata from the outside of the tank but this at least shows the color so I can track it; lost a lot of color from the last time I got a frag from this colony so it will be interesting to see if it comes back or not.

Frag I killed from the same colony (taken mid October)

The previous lights lit up the entire stand and algae really appreciated it; maintenance on the skimmer and carbon reactor were starting to become a pain in the so I wanted to find a solution to cut back on this. I relocated the carbon reactor to the return chamber of the sump (far right) and was able to lower the H80 far enough to eliminate light creep into the skimmer chamber (left) and return chamber completely while illuminating the entire refugium area and then some (if the mount would allow, I could drop the light four more inches and still have adequate spread).

Notes:
1) Location 3 is centered under one light right to left but not front to back (approx 4" behind the center line front to back).
2) Locations 6 is very close to the center of the tank (left to right and front to back).
3) The lights are centered over the tank front to back and 15" apart (7.5" left and right of center).
4) The lights are mounted 5" above the water line.
5) At a depth of 15" (roughly where my sand is), there is a bit of light spillage on all viewing sides of the aquarium so the lights could be mounted closer to the water without losing coverage (would increase PAR values).
6) PAR values were measured on our local clubs MQ-500 with full spectrum sensor using a correction factor of 1.32.
7) Standard 75g Marineland aquarium 48"x18"x21" (LxWxH).
8) Two Kessil A360WE running 65% color.
9) MP40s set to feed mode while measurements were taken.

Maintenance performed:

Did a round of testing today to see how my results compare to the Triton analysis (samples collected at the same time today).

Salinity - 1.025 (refractometer calibrated and checked twice)
Alkalinity - 9.6 (Hanna)
Ca - 420 (Hanna)
Mg - 1335 (Salifert)
PO4 - .049 (Hanna ULR)
NO3 - 2.5-5.0 (Salifert)

On the 6th dKH was 10.5 (been dosing Randy's recipe #1); alkalinity consumption was considerably higher when the levels were over 10 (dropped to 9.7 within 24 hours). Another 24 hours later it was 9.6. I've been trying to maintain 8-8.5 but may experiment with levels around 10 given the perceived increase in consumption. Ca was 459 on the 6th and is 420 today. Reduced dosing of alk and Ca to 15ml today and will check results tomorrow (ordered BRS dosing pumps the other day and awaiting arrival). Salifert alkalinity test has results .6 lower than the Hanna; this matches the delta I measured months ago. Red Sea test is .15 lower than Hanna so I tend to believe the actual results are somewhere between the Red Sea and Hanna.

Light intensity increased 5%, to 50%.

Added a LET 48" T5 retrofit with an ATI Coral+ and Blue+. The acros seemed to have an immediate response and opened up a bit more than usual (they're new and just starting to open up and spread). The green toadstool immediately closed (being rehomed to make way for the acros). Tomorrow I have the T5s coming on for two hours at the peak of the photo period (4pm). I need to find a better way to integrate them (the T5s) right now but I don't have the ability to dim them without an expansion for the controller (using the two existing dimming ports for the Kessils but I may swap them to the T5s and run a constant intensity on the Kessils). Might be a good excuse to switch over the the Profilux 4 since I really need the expansion, WiFi and dimming modules for the RA+. The dosing pumps should be here Thursday bringing the used relay count up to 13 (how did this happen). I like the extra light the T5s have cast into the nooks and crannies of the rock work; it has added a little more dimension to the tank and has made the corals pop a bit more. Shimmer from the Kessils is still present though significantly diffused.

Tank is only using about .2 dKH per day at this point but I expect this is going to increase fairly quickly now that the acros are starting to encrust the plugs.

The BRS dosers arrived today so I got to work mounting them; I had no idea they were so large! Figured this was the best way to arrange them so I could still fill the ATO res (gotta due something about that blue...) and I still have room to add a third if/when the time comes. Think I'm out of red extension cords that fit (pretty sure all I have left are two foot cords and I'll need three foot cords to hit the lower relays of the second box) so I'll have to order a few of those.

I still need some 3/16 acrylic tubing for the pick up lines in the bottles but it's up and running; here's hoping my math was correct (will be out of town all week)...

Unintended consequence of running the T5 retrofit; oh well. The housing of the Kessil is 88°, the reflector on the T5 is 149°.

Triton results were posted and there weren't too many surprises. Lithium was pretty high and outside of the salt mix, I'm not exactly sure where it would have come from. One big surprise was phosphate coming up at zero (I measured .049 with a Hanna ULR at the time I took the Triton sample). Calcium levels matched the Salifert results I took; about 20ppm higher than the Hanna kit at 420 vs 444 for Salifert so I think I'll stick with the Salifert since it is easier and appears more accurate. Sg was was 1.025 on the refractometer and the Triton results added up to 1.0266 so that was fairly close as well.
