Offshore Oil drilling

The spill confirms my stance against offshore oil drilling. Things like this will be happening more and more. Don't want to see it on anyone's beach nor on mine. We've been lazy in getting off the oil teet.

Oil is use for just about everything my friend. look around you. your computer probably has something made from oil. Fact is that using oil for gasoline isnt very profitable. nearly everything in our lives is made from oil. Here is a list of somethings. Oil is used for sooo many things other than just gas which is why we are still so very dependent of it.

SO what then you ready to give up everything you have your job and return to the caves? Is it worth it yes and no.....There is no solid answer, they want to put in wind farms on the east coast but the enviros say "NO AWAY" and yet we have to move to a more alternative energy source......So what do we do in the mean time? Just stop the largest economy in the world till something is created that produces enough energy to start it up again? Mind you that there is nothing this side of Nuclear that produces the amount of energy per BTU as oil based products that is the problem with alternative energy right now for industry. As bad as this situation is it was an accident period....They don't want Nuclear, wind farms, oil,coal.....What's left?

These stages can occur while oil is being produced from offshore wells, handled, and temporarily stored; or when oil is being transported offshore, either by flow line, underwater pipeline, or tanker. Of the approximately 706 million gallons of waste oil in the ocean each year, offshore drilling operations contribute about 2.1 percent, and transportation accidents (both ships and tankers) account for another 5.2 percent. The amount of oil spilled or leaked during offshore production operations is relatively insignificant.

Oil waste from offshore drilling operations may come from disposal of oil-based drilling fluid wastes, deck runoff water, flow line and pipeline leaks, or well failures or blowouts. Disposal of offshore production waste can also pollute the ocean, as can deck runoff water, leaking storage tanks, flow line and pipeline leaks, and the wells themselves. Oil spilled from ships and tankers includes the transportation fuel used by the vessels themselves or their cargoes, such as crude oil, fuel oil, or heating oil."

So in reality it is safe, with issues that can and should be looked at for a less impact.....But what is far more damaging is the waste water run off....But that isn't as sexy as a tragedy like this nor does it make money with viewership or help push an agenda which in the end is what this will do and become a political football.....That is the real shame.....It's bad enough to have tragedy like this but now we will use it for political purposes.

I think everybody agrees we need to move to something better and cleaner.....

I'm still for it and I'm still for finding other ways to produce fuel and the items it's used for.

It's very sad that 11 people lost their lives and that wildlife will be affected by this.

How many animals are run over by cars everyday? How many birds are struck by airplanes? How many oil spills do we have on a daily basis? :)

Other than saying "yes" or "no," I don't see how the OP's question can be answered without entering a political discussion (energy technologies, regional difference, environmental impacts, human health and safety). That hasn't stopped some Mods from going political though, which in itself is entertaining. So, I'll just say "yes" this has changed my view offshore drilling.

Nope hasn't changed my opinion. I have and still am 100% against any oil drilling in any body of water.


Was in the 1st Gulf War etc........ and saw the mess oil created there figuratively and literally.

Sorry, it may have sounded like I was dancing on the political line but that wasn't my intention. I think we can discuss energy technologies, regional difference, environmental impacts, and human health and safety without being political.

Is saying solar, wind,or wave technology may help lessen the need for oil a political view? Or that those technologies are less efficient than oil.

I'm sure as a reefing site we can all acknowledge that outside the impact of the 11 lives lost, the marine ecosystem will have the greatest impacted by this oil leak. See, not political :D .

Living in the DC area I get enough political talk on the radio so I was just looking for views and thoughts on the safety and use of offshore drilling.

I hated off shore drilling before and I hate it more now.
THose that say drilling in alaska will not affect anything but the polar bears beware. I just watched "LIFE" its amazing how much life there is below 8' of ice all the time.
This just goes to show how big oil does not care what it does to the environment to make a buck. I hate all oil drilling especially risky oil drilling. The failsafes for this big of teh big rigs were never tested properly and now we will have catastrophic ecosystem damage both fresh and saltwater will be affected.

This just happened in Australia and it took 3 months to get it stopped. look at what has happened in a week. imagine 1 month from now??? the gulf of mexico will become a fish wasteland of death.

sorry this is an oil companies greed getting in the way of safety.
They are not any better than the mining company that disregarded safety and caused the death of 29 coal miners.

btw I was a safety and training supervisor for 5 years. When you knowingly violate safety protocols (both companies have numerous write ups on safety violations) you should be made to pay the price. unfortunately 50 people have died in a short time so 2 companies could make more money from a dirty, outdated energy source. coal and oil should be phased out.
we have the technology just not the backbone to put it into mainstream use.

I hated the idea before, I hate the idea more now. We have had some HUGE hurricanes come through the Gulf as everyone who lives in the southern states will tell you. Will these things hold up to another Katrina? If it falls with no storm what will happen if we get another one. What then we have to rebuild our houses, beaches, and clean up oil? Who cares about flood damage when you have oil damage.

It hasnt changed my mind, just reinforced my opinion. I am totally against off shore oil drilling.

Living in So Cal, it would be a full shame to build oil rigs off our coast.

We need more hybrid cars, better MPG standards and more electronic cars.

That would go a long way into cutting our oil consumption and oil needs.

Now that reports are coming out that BP has downplayed the amount of oil being pumped into the gulf has anyone changed their mind? If not, how bad does the damage have to be to alter your view? BP estimated at least 90 days to stop the leak. In my opinion they are giving a wildly optimistic estimates. It seems they spent all their research dollars figuring out how to get the oil and none on how to stop a catastrophic situation such as the one we have now. Personally I am not confident that they will ever stop the leak. When is enough enough?
