Well after a good long hiatus I’m getting back in the game.

I have been keeping fish since the age of 10 with my dad, and haven’t been able to shake the addiction 30 years later. Most my time has been spent in the fresh water world but I have had a few fowler tanks, and some unsuccessful pick reef attempts.

After a good long break, and some tweaks to my mentality, I’ve decided I may be ready to buy once, buy good, and most of all be patient. With that said I was able to get a pretty good start.

Equipment:
NuVo 40g aio tank
Aps innovative marine stand
Kessil A360we tuna blue light
Extra media baskets in overflows
2 reefbreeders RP-M powerheads
Reefbreeders ato
Ehiem heater for now
10g tank for rodi reservoir
30lb dry rock treated with frizt turbo start

I still need to get skimmer, thinking the NuVo skimmer (unless I can get better suggestions here). Also looking to get Rodi here in the next week or so (currently buying from lfs).

for live stock I’m still unsure what to do. I want a blend of soft, lps, and some easier sps. For fish probably just the standard pair of clowns (love the mocha davinci), maybe a cleaner wrasse or two, and undecided on a smaller angel fish.

anyhow enough typing, here’s some pics.

Well so elbow grease and determination today. Not sure why the NuVo aps stands do not come with shelving, but maybe it’s like buying a car and you can remove options to get it cheaper dunno.

it did not sit well with me and being a diy guy anyhow I decided to add some in, so I can build a panel wall you house the controllers I have and plan on having. Anyway here’s some shots of my Bob vila like wood skills. I’m not complete yet and yes I will paint when done.

Tough crowd lol...

anyone have any skimmer recommendations?

Any how, had some time before band practice and decided to work a bit on under the stand, also received the ATO from reef builders today. Got that installed and it did as it should.

as far as under the stand goes I need to get my heater controller, and second RP-M powerhead in, paint and call it day under the stand. Now if only these nitrites would go down so I could add some life.

Well final post on the shelf/panel build. Finished it up after band practice with a coat of white paint. Not to shabby for some old wood looming in garage.

In the off chance someone reads this, and has some experience with it, i would love some insight.

On 2/24/21, my local LFS gave me some TurboStart by Fritz. They had just enough left over in a bottle to dose my 40g tank.

After Dosing tank, i waited for test kits to arrive, and got them on 2/26/21. Tested ammonia on 2/27/21 and was already down about to 0, so tested nitrites, and was very high. Long story short i have tested them daily since, just watching the cycle progress, but they have remained at 5.0ppm since 2/27/21. While i know its hardly time to panic or even be through it by conventional standards, comparing to the stores tank they dosed (30g tank), they have completely passed through the cycle in 5 days. I have read alot of people saying they got stuck at nitrites with these turbo starts, and curious if i may be in for a long ride in this part of the cycle or what others experienced.

Thanks for any replys.

Been a while since update. Been mostly posting on Instagram due to lack of response here. Added a bit of coral and some other things.

ended up swapping out the kessil for a GMK polyp, and going with a reefbreeders photon v2+. Anyhow here’s some shots as it sits.

Tank looks nice. I have the same tank, mine has been running since February. I only have 1 clown and a cuc but I will be adding more things in a few weeks. I've been battling hair algae like crazy... Are you dosing anything or running a reactor?

I'm running the IM skimmer. Fits perfectly in the back. It seems to be working ok. Taking the pump a part to clean I broke the plastic piece. It still works but I wanted to get a new one. Can't find them anywhere though. Did you ever decide on a skimmer ?

I did get the same skimmer as you, took about 2 weeks to start pulling dark stuff but has been working well.

I am not dosing anything at the moment, but do have a bit of cyano im about to start tackling.

Tank looks great, I really like the DIY shelving. I've been running this tank a little over a year. Definitely some ups and downs but my tank is at the point where everything is stable and thriving. I'm using the same skimmer as you. It pulls a lot of dark junk but for a while I was battling high nutrient levels, even with good husbandry. Once I added an algae scrubber and it started producing, the tank started to thrive. Good luck with your build, so far everything looks great
