Anyone have a good place to buy an online clean up crew for my 29g reef tank? I saw this package on reef2go, but it seems to be a little too much for a 30 gallon tank to me unless they are extremely small. Anyone else think it is a bit too much?
  • 20 Blue Leg Hermit Crabs
  • 4 Scarlett Leg Hermit Crabs
  • 10 Turbo Snails
  • 10 Nassarius Snails

The packages on reef2go are not as big as you think but worth the money

I think you would be better off just buying some snails from your LFS. For a 29 gallon tank, three or four Banded Trochus snails and maybe one scarlet hermit crab should be all you'll need IMO. Don't forget, you can keep the glass and the sand clean all by yourself. There's really no need to rely on a small army of invertebrates to keep your tank clean when you can do the work yourself. GL.

And this is also very true, small tanks do not need much, if you get 20 hermits and 20 snails or something like that, most will starve to death.

The first two months I only had one hermit and 5 snails. They were busy but they are still alive. I have added more since then but I only have 5 hermits and no more than 5 of certain groups of snails based upon the algae they eat and the location of where they like to "work"... and they type of algae that I have growing in my 30 gal tank.

It sounds like you're trying to sell me buying a lot of invertebrates. I'd much rather them do the work, I pay the maid $100 each time she cleans, paying $70 and them working for their life seems like a really really good deal to me.

I totally understand you can get too many for the tank, it sounds like they are smaller from the reviews. I over did it in a tank once and lost a few turbos.

hate to break it to you but they wont really keep you tank spotless, you will still have to scrape the glass.

Thanks I liked that one the most, unfortunately I have a feeling a lot will die off because it is over kill but picking what I want is a nice option.

Yes I realize that but they make a huge difference!!! It'll cut clean time less than half the time. I would never go with out a clean up crew.

I disagree... YOU will always much more efficient at keeping your tank clean than any CUC will be, not to mention you won't be pooping in the tank either. ;)

Good luck though.

I just purchased my cleanup crew from reef cleaners. Great customer service and the price and the additional shells for the little guys were great.

Absolutely. You'll see snails on the glass but not Nassarius. they're carnivores and only stay in the sand until they smell food.
