Hello all, so I’m thinking about purchasing a captive bred goldflake angelfish, and was wondering if it will live or not. The fish to chose from are about 2.5 inches( I’ll post pictures) does anyone have experience or know if these will survive? I would keep it in a 20 gallon quarantine with a pair of non aggressive healthy clowns for 2-3 months where I can watch it, feed it, and grow it. It will then go into a 180. If you do think I should purchase one, which one looks best?

The biggest issue is if it is at a LFS... it probably has been exposed to wild fish/disease vs just buying directly from Biota.

They come in much larger than multibars and because of that their overall survivability is much better.

It is not straight from biota. It’s from another online store and they are exposed to other fish. They’ve been in the tanks about 2 months and the others that have sold have got great reviews. Not sure if they put other wild fish in the same tanks but I know they are kept in the same tanks as captive bred emporers.

Even if kept in seperate system who''s to say they won''t cross contaminate with other system via food, nets, etc. Best to have copper, Prazi and antibiotics ready. If they've been there for 2 months and at 2.5 inches you should really have a very good chance of this fish making it.

None of that matters. The animal is at a LFS so unless they properly quarantine, separation, and bio-security it is a moot point. There are vendors that do that like marine collectors for "one" example.

The answer to your original question that you asked, "was wondering if it will live or not" that is solely up to you. Are you experienced enough to keep it? Do you have a properly set up environment? Assortment of food? Feeding multiple times a day?

I have been in the saltwater hobby for more than a year, and have experience with many large angels. A 3 inch chrysurus, 3.5 inch blue face, 7 inch emporer, 6 inch passer king, 5 inch French. These have all made it and done good. I have kept a 1 inch emporer and a 1 inch majestic, which both died. That was before I had a quarantine and had much less experience. It will go into a 180 with the large angels still living, and I have tricks that made all angles listed be nice to each other and model citizens, so there’s very very low aggression. I feed pellets once a day, nori once a day, and then a big meal that Varys of jumbo mysis, mysis, krill, clams, and some angel mixtures

Assume it carries disease and medicate quarantine it. With good husbandry, there is no reason it shouldn’t do well.

My favorite thing to treat with is prazipro. Should I not treat until signs of disease, and what other medications do you recommend. Not a huge fan of copper by the way

There is a set quarantine protocol on this site and on humble fish site. You can choose which you like.

The major diseases:

Ich/velvet: copper or chloroquine sulfate
Flukes: Prazipro
Brooklynella: Metronidazole
Uronema: Formalin or to a lesser degree Metronidazole
Internal parasites: Metronidazole laced foods

Treating the first two will knock out a large parentage of possible reasons for death

Or you can wait until Biota has the fish again and buy from them. The chance of disease with them is less but not zero.

Much much cheaper where I’m buying it from, way to expensive at biota. I will take a look at quarantine protocols, thank you

It’s a beautiful fish!!! And I agree that retail stores that carry Biota are cheaper than Biota usually.

Quarantine is not difficult. It’s just a bit of labor and learning curve. The more you do it the easier it gets. There is a lot of info on it. My favorite meds are copper power/Hanna copper tester/prazicleanse/metroplex/focus. With these you can do all of your quarantine. I will only use Formalin if I have a high index of suspicion for Uronema. But that is rare with a lot of fish.

The other alternative is to buy from a reputable vendor who does the quarantine for you. But it won’t be as cheap

Please keep in mind that the price of the fish may be less at the store, but if/when that fish gets sick and passes, the long term price will be much more. That’s why it’s so important to quarantine with meds.

Biota has 7 days but you did mention it being much cheaper so it may be worth the risk if you ok with quarantine.
$200 cheaper which, which means I would be paying $200 for a 7 day gaurentee I hopefully won’t need

You’re a bit late man, haha. I bought him and he’s doing great. Got flukes in my quarantine, treated with prazi pro, and now he’s all good. Was slightly bullied when I put him in, but then after a day or two it stopped.

Jwheels, that french will get huge. Did your queen make it?
@W31Olds Queens doing great, added him in last week. Passer messed with him a bit but everything calmed down. He did good for the rest of the quarantine with no issues and I just treated with prazi pro. When I was adding him into the 180 I had to pick him up to move him where he started freaking out like crazy, thank gosh I didn’t drop him. I know that not only the French but all of my angels will get huge. When they start showing some size I will get a 300 gallon tank and/or rehome some
