I have never ordered fish online. We recently moved and do not have a LFS. We do drive about 2 hours to purchase corals and fish for our new Biocube 32. (We downsized our tank due to moving). I am skeptical about ordering online. Please list resources to help with skepticism. 😊 Thanks!

@Dr. Reef Can help alleviate some of your concerns!

As long as you get them from reputable sources, you will be fine.

Reputable sources will:

1. Know how to ship, with no food in the fish, with proper insulation, amonnia blockers...

2. Send you healthy specimens

3. Have a good DOA policy that can sometimes extend to upto a week.

We do have some sponsors on this forum that also Quarantine the fish for you like @Dr. Reef

I've ordered fish online before and never really had a problem. Just make sure to research the source before ordering. as @Gumbies R Us mentioned, @Dr. Reef has some really good reviews here :)

Thank you for taggings us in, We appreciate your support.
To anwer OP, Any reputable online places are ok to order from. Regarding us as Dr Reef, we provide service a little different than other.
1. we dont charge you at checkout. Most all do. Then you are stuck with money out till they are ready to ship your fish. We charge just a few days prior to shipping.
2. If there are doa and delays etc, some online places with regards to delays will tell you its not on them, We back our customers up, We also provide insurance for just a few dollas to have a peace of mind in case anything goes wrong.
3. We provide several days guarantee on all livestock except a handful that are expert only and even then we have replaced livestock for tons of people even if it was beyond guarantee period.
4. All our livestock is quarantined and cure of major known diseases. if you dont prefer that option then our partner site www.affordableaquaria.com provides non qted livestock but conditioned. Thes fish are still better than other livestock providers because we have conditioned them for your tank.
5. Other are in it for money, Dr Reef is a hobbyist turned into a business and Dr Reef own many other businesses so this is onlfor the passion for the hobby not for money.
6. Our customer service and overall serive is unmatched and you can read our review here.

7. Biggest insentive is 20% off currently for our XMAS in July sale.

@Dr. Reef just started reading about you guys!

Sorry if this is a bit forward but I'm really interested in buying from you and wanted to do my due diligence. How do we know that you guys are actually QTing for 4-6 weeks?

Any reason why the guarantee is only 3 days? I see a lot of online stores (that do not QT) with a 7 Day Guarantee.

I used to buy from LiveAquaria and had decent results, but as many have already posted, LiveAquaria took a huge dive in quality. Starting a new tank soon and want to stock it up with a better vendor and my LFSs near me aren't very good.

I'd love to buy from a small business like you guys seem to be!

Hi thank you for reaching out.
We have a 10k sq ft facility along with 3 more smaller warehouses. We been in business about 7 years commercially now. we had a few hiccups in the begining but for last 3-4 years we have perfected our protocol and process.

To answer your question, we do keep the fish for first 14 days in copper and then rest 14 days in prazi and metro. thus 30 days for sure then if they dont sell they are here longer.
Becuase we have a lot of space now we have most commont fast selling fish in bulk qted and ready to ship most all the time.
We ship about 60-80 orders per day and with 5-6 fish per order, Thats 300-350 fish daily 4 days a week, If they were not qted internet will light up with complaints and bad reviews.

Regarding 3 day quarantee. If anything is going to happen its going to be in first day or 2. Beyond that fish will survive for a long time. Also that is just a written policy, if you read through our feedbacks and threads/forums you will find we have covered fish way out of guarantee period, If it makes it easier for you, we can cover your fish for 7 days. (exclusion: Expert fish)
Let us know if there is something else we can do to ease your decision.

Wow thank you for the fast response! You guys definitely seem to be bigger than I thought!

So since you guys do all of these QT protocols, there won't be chance of ich or velvet breaking out since the fish have gone through a full QT with you guys right?

In my experience the fish seem to take a few days to start eating and adjusting etc. after shipping. The 3 day guarantee is something I'm still kind of concerned about but glad to hear that you guys are somewhat lenient with the policy.

Do you guys do anything to keep the fish from getting too hot when shipping during the summer?

Yes over the years our operation has grown from basment to warehouses. Due to the growth, we are in multiple warehouses (signed leases) so as soon as these leases are over, we are building our very own warehouse to consolidate the entire business under 1 roof. It will be another year or so for that to happen.

First off we have really good sources for fish. That makes our lives half way easy. We have not seen ich on our incoming fish in almost 3 years and because we do copper/uv/ozone etc and other meds, we guarantee our fish not to have the major 4 (ich/velvet/brook/uronema) and internal worms/flukes. Pretty much covering most of the nasty's that people dont want in their tanks.
We are also very open and forward with our species if we dont have a good source.
We recently started getting chromis from Kenya and Lyretail anthios and dispar from Red Sea. Those we can guarentee not to have any uronema. rest of the anthias are 50/50. as internal uronema is extremely hard to detect.

For shipping, we use standard styrofoam coolers and carboard outside, Our bags are specially made for us. They are 4 mil thick bags, (industry standard is 2 mil). Our bags are heat sealed from all 4 sides, No rubberband, or clips to fail. One can stand on our seal bag and it will not burst. (youtube has some videos)
Regarding keeping temp control, We have done many experiments and thus learned how many heat pack and how many cold packs are needed to ship in certain temps.
We also dont ship if temps are too high or too low.

Following is a chart of our experiment.

If ambient is 90F with NO cold pack in the box,(pink line) temp remains 75F from 7pm (ups drop off) to 10am delivery
with 1 cold pack it starts at 75F dips down to 70F and by time of delivery its about 72F
With 2 cold packs that gets a little too cold as it dips down to 67F. But we do use 2 sometimes if temps are higher than 100F.

By the way we also sell non qted fish that are conditioned, (For those who dont want to buy qted fish or want to do their own qt or dont qt at all) these fish have much better chance than regualr retail as some of the initial work has been done by us.
For that you can goto https://affordableaquaria.com/

I’m happy with my experience with Dr. Reef. I lost my Achilles tang after a week of having it. There wasn’t any outwardly disease or illness; the fish was eating and behaving healthy the night before. It seems like it accidentally wedged itself in a rock. Nevertheless, Mike’s sending me another one with full compensation.

Besides for the freak accident, I’ve had a 100% success rate with the other 14 anthias, tangs, and pyramid fish from him. No ich or any diseases are in my tank. I’ve had a dismal survival rate when I QT myself and would have saved so much had I just started with him.
