I made an over flow following YouTube. it works really well except it makes a constant grumbling sound. the flow is good but at a constant interval a large bubble will come out. it like a giant fart in water.

what could be the problem?

You probably need a gate valve on it.
You should post pics so everyone can see what you have available for upgrade or changes.

Best guess is the drain/plumbing has a section that travels up hill trapping air until it goes full siphon pulling the bubble out until it rebuilds again.

Like seanb1 said, without a picture, its just a shot in the dark.

Let me guess PVC? Those are junk. I wouldn’t put a valve on it unless it’s a bean animal or herbie overflow. To put a valve on this type of overflow is asking for a flood all over your floor. Your problem is not enough air flow in the pipe. You also need the pipe in the sump to be slightly underwater and stay underwater.

I can't drill because my tank is already set up. i did this because i read i could use algae in the sump to eat up all the nitrates and phosphates. i left it running overnight and the grumbling noise stopped. I am afraid of some sort of failure as well. i unplugged it a couple times and the sump seems to handled any excess water and the overflow does stop.

A HOB overflow would be more reliable then what you have.
Do what I did in my FW planted 75 gallon. Buy a HOB with 2 drain bulkheads. I used an eshoppes pf-1200 and set it up with a herbie. Very quiet and reliable so far!
