Painting Snails...

That’s a great idea! I bet you can get any colour of the rainbow, maybe even glow in the dark! Plus it would probably be relatively non-toxic.

I used to shoot chipmunks as a kid.. If a snail will put you in jail I don't even know what's in line for me!! :0

This is probably the dumbest thing I've posted yet, but I need to ask. I have some large Astrea Snails in my QT tank that I will be moving to my Display in a week or two. My daughter (7) wants to paint the shell of a particularly large snail. So I have some questions,

1. Is this cruel?
2. Is there a paint that will not hurt the snail or the inhabitants of my tank?
3. What about glow in the dark paint?

I swear this is for my daughter and not me...

I am sure this will sound horrible to some, but maybe the proper thing to do here is to teach your daughter (regardless of her age) how to treat all living things. Why would anyone entertain such an idea? Besides the harm it could do to the poor snail, why would you take a chance on what it might do to your tank. If she wants to paint, maybe shells from the beach or dead coral would be a good place to start.

Wow this is simply false information. You clearly have done no research on this topic. Fish and aquarium animals in general are not covered under the same animal cruelty laws as cats, dogs and other animals. Whether or not there's a morality issue here is not for anyone to decided but the owner.

The best way to go about this would be to put the snail in a shallow lid full of water so only the snails shell would be out long enough to be painted. Lightly dry the shell and paint. Do not use any source of heat to cure the paint as that may cook the snail obviously. Try to find a fast drying aquarium safe paint.

I'm interested is this as well I am adding more shells for the hermits soon and my SO wants to paint some, and as for the cruelty part any body who's is objecting to painting a snail, I would seriously suggest you look into a practice called tagging, and explain how this is any different if not much better? Also petsmart offers a service where they pretty much Airbrush your pet with dye.

I understand your point. However some people few "us" reefers as being cruel. There are people and organizations that are against us keep fish in boxes in our homes. But I do not think its that cruel as long as the animal isn't harmed.

I struggle myself at times in regards to the hobby as a whole. If you really think about it, it’s quite cruel in itself.

Just scan this one forum in a day and look at all the livestock that dies from parasites, infections, ammonia, etc. Taking all these specimens from their natural environment and sticking them in a glass cage. I’ve been in this hobby going on like 15 years now so seem a lot... But I love my fish!

However doing something completely unnatural such as using paint on a animal isn’t necessary, nor would any of the Randy Farley, Scott Fellman, Bob Fenner, etc find it to be an acceptable practice in the reef hobby.

All the people seriously standing way higher than us "cruel people" are some serious hypocrites. Now fishmanz is name dropping pros in the hobby, it's a joke people! Seriously, is having a sense of humor in life that horrible? Personally, I think peoples reaction to this is absolutely funny. Teach your children about caring for your animals, don't ever paint them because it could harm them, lol. That snail has a name! Lol. I love all my animals and give them the up most care but some of these comments are priceless. Oh yeah, it's a joke....

I don't know that one can be "cruel" to a snail. I don't think it would good for the animal to be dry for as long as it would take to paint it.

Since there is no way I would want something like that in my tank, I would use this as an opportunity to educate my daughter on the nature aspect of reef-keeping. and how we shouldn't alter animals for our amusement.

I'm painting a snail today ;Nailbiting think I'll paint my clownfish too, I haven't seen a blue and orange one before. I will rename him Denver.
