Does it do anything as far as helping the tank? I think it’s a beautiful fish. Is it a hider?

One of my all-time favorite fish. Habitat is critical for them though, they don't thrive without the right pieces in place. Very similar needs to a Diamond Goby, which are similar but not QUITE as much fun for me.

As mentioned, a lid/screen is a must. They're jumpers, and particularly well suited to it too since they naturally swim vertical.

Since they're sand-sifters, you need to make sure the substrate is fine sand in order to prevent damage to their gills. You also need to beware that they like to dig under rocks, so if your rockwork is on top of the substrate this can potentially make it move.

Make sure to have some various pieces of shells and small rock rubble available to them. They're not just diggers, they're also builders. It's a hoot to watch them re-arranging all the stuff around their den. Mine never did it, but I'm told that some will actually pick a favorite rock/shell, and close the 'door' to their den at night.

Fantastic fish that will break your heart if you don't have the right setup.

Having a tight-fitting lid that covers EVERY potential escape is ABSOLUTELY essential with them. They get spooked at the drop of a hat. And they will find any opening that your lid has, even the tiniest one that they can fight through. For example, I had one of them in a Biocube. Said Biocube has a full top, with maybe a 3/4" opening between the top of the false wall at the back of the display area and the lid. On no less than four separate occasions within a three-day period, he managed to jump back into the filtration area. I bought a fish saver from InTank that blacks off that back area... but he jumped enough to kill himself in between me placing the order and the fish saver arriving.
