Peeping tom or "just cutting through the yard"

Ok, so I have been up cleaning and resetting up my reef tank electronics. (I'll be making a separate post for that). Forgot I left some detergent in the car and figured I'd go an grab it before it explodes from the heat in my car. As I walk outside I see out of the corner of my eye an man to the right of me maybe 10-15 feet away. That is just at the end of my house where there is a window with a small veiw inside maybe 8" (cats like to perch and look outside) and right near my fence where the hurricane tore down my gate.Mind you it is 0300 in the morning. The first thing Isay......"Ohhhhh....POOOOOP!!!!!!!" he stops looks at me then contines walking through my grass. He's like or sorry just cutting across. What do I say? "sorry, not used to having people walk across my grass in the middle of the night." Now I'm freaked out because I have been walking from the house to the shed multiple times tonight and was cleaning up things I left out in the grass this evening not 2 minutes ago. The thing is I have been getting this creepy feeling all week thinking someone was staring at me when I was walking in my yard at night going to the shed and back.
So I called my BF who is working right now with no answer....my next idea... vent to you guys, some how that makes me feel safer......not sure why.Or at least less anxious, now I'm drinking a beer to settles my nerves.

Yeah. Creepy. He was probably passing by, saw the light on and came closer for a peepy look. Sounds like you need to carry a baseball bat, or at least a long piece of PVC, when you step outside late at night. Teach people “cutting across your lawn” at 3am is not cool.

Brother in law had a similar thing happen. It was about 1AM and the dog was barking at the window. He woke up, went to grab her to take her outside, looked out the window. Standing there was a guy in a hoodie staring into his window at him. He freaked out, screamed for my father in law and the guy took off. No idea what he was doing, but still freaky.

I would change some things if I where you.

Living in West Virginia I have guns, a 92 pound German Shepard and motion lights around the house. There is not even a local police Department I can call. I would be on my own.
Here we are used to that because that is how it has always been.

You got lucky. If you had luck like mine you wouldn't rely on that.

Probably just cutting through, but might be a peeper. Look around your property at where people tend to walk. How likely is it that your property is a convenient shortcut?

Motion sensor lights can be a good security enhancer. Just keep in mind that they sometimes turn on for seemingly no reason.

If they turn on in the middle of the night you wake the dog and pet him. You don't go out to see why.

Ours are pretty sensitive.
Tree branches, the cat, neighbors dog...

But in a dark house you can see outside better than they can see in.

I always look to be sure.
Neighborhood with nice sidewalks and lots of walking traffic later into the night and again early morning.

Sounds like a burglar scoping the place out rather than a peeping Tom. In either case you should call the police. We sometimes get people going through 15 cars a night. I'd keep your car/house doors locked

Here he would be caught on the Security cams W/Night vision. Super Creepy, There is Really NO Reason for someone to be inside someone else yard in wee hours of the Morning. This is how people end up shot .

There’s no legit reason to come onto anyone’s property after hours that most people would consider bedtime. You were lucky that you are able to still tell us about it!

I’d get some Ring cameras, or similar, to keep watch on things from now on. I have a spotlight camera with motion sensor, alarm, two way radio in my backyard. I also have a Ring doorbell for the front.

Behind the door is a large dog that barks at everything and a shotgun :-)
