Hey all! Question as I’m still relatively new, was adding a peppermint shrimp today from the lfs. Floated the bag, started to add tank water every 5 minutes (about 1/4 cup), and eventually transferred him to the tank! He was on the net for a while holding on inside the tank but then suddenly let go and went stiff! Nassarius started to come out and he hit the sand, so you can guess the rest from there!

I have had other inverts in for a week or so and they have been fine, and my initial reaction was thinking something had to be wrong with my water so I tested…

Ph:8.0
Salinity: 34.6 ppm
Ammonia: 0.05(Hanna)
Nitrite: 0.0

I mostly just wanted to make sure I didn’t do anything wrong to cause this as I wouldn’t wanna try again and see the same result because I was overlooking something? Are shrimp just a little less hardy or? Thanks in advance!

Possibly a salinity issue. Do you know what your LFS specific gravity is? Drip acclimation is good for these.

I unironically was reading on the drip acclimation but then happened by accident lot of conflicting information on if it was necessary or not for the shrimp!

A lot of fish stores keep their fish and inverts at really low salinity levels. It's always wise to test the salinity in the bag. Larger differences usually require longer acclimating.

Shouldn’t have any ammonia or nitrite.
It’s a Hanna checker I’m pretty sure it recognizes the plus or minus of ammonia in the tank. Or so I’ve read but 0.05 doesn’t seem like a real reading to me idk, tanks fluctuate also, there’s no way that at different times this number doesn’t go up and down based on where the bacteria are in eating the ammonia and nitrite

Yeah I think this must have been my mistake? It’s the only thing I can come up with, though the snails are from here too but maybe a bit more hardy and are also in a different tank

I always thought coral and inverts were kept in higher salinty. Around here they all are and one of the reasons I don't buy fish from tanks that don't have inverts and/or corals. I've bought peppermints from reef cleaners and a few lfs and just temp and drop and have never lost one that way. I just added two last Saturday.

My LFS always tells me that shrimp must be acclimated very slowly. They recommend drip acclimation to ease the stress on the shrimp. Evidently they are very sensitive to changes in temp and salinity.
