Segment 9/11: Managing nitrates and phosphates by feeding more or less food is a thing of the past. Our reef tank filtration methods are so far advanced, changing feeding habits to control excess nutrients is a pin prick in the overall solution. However don't forget about the power of choosing the right fish and coral foods to help optimize phosphate and nitrate independently.

It's all about choices. Certain frozen fish foods might have lower phosphates than dry foods while dry foods and pellets might have more nitrates. Gaming these foods could be the solution to finding a balance or equilibrium between of the nutrients in your tank.

Segment 10/11: Reef tank filtration... How do filter socks and fleece rollers control Nitrates and Phosphates? How do protein skimmers remove nitrate and phosphate? What about refugiums, algae reactors and scrubbers?

There are three stages to filtration: Stage 1- Solid form waste removal. Stage 2- Broken down dissolved waste removal. Stage 3- Testable Nitrate & Phosphate removal.

When is it that someone going to come out at tell the truth to the community about pest algae’s? Macro algae’s don’t grow naturally in a reef tank, 10 out of 10 times it comes as a hitchhiker! Play safe and hidrogen peroxide dip, it kills all pest algae’s. tank me later

Segment 11/11: What's the role of water changes in our reef tanks if our filtration is so advanced? Do we need water changes? Can water changes even aid in our nitrate and phosphate control approach?

Water changes are more than just nutrient control. They are a buffer for all sorts of tank pollutants and toxins. If there is one insurance policy to help your tank get past your human nature to forget or lose track of the "best" practices, water changes are the key.
