I also have snakes but found they prefer their food alive. Needless to say most mice dont get time to react

Exactly! I've owned plenty of snakes and just like fish you pretty much have to train them to eat frozen food. And yes petco sells feeders, it would be irresponsible for them to sell an animal without having the proper food source readily available. Also, petco employees aren't the brightest of the bunch and most of them have minor experience if any with most of the critters they sale.

Well then they shouldn't sell snakes. Or mice or ferrets or fish should i go on ? They sell pets. Not food. Its their policy why be upset go to another source ? They lose money not u

Have you ever been to petco? Saying they sell pets and not pet food is an ignorant statement.

Bag dog food and cat food ect is different would u expect petco to sell you a mouse to feed your cat or how about a cat to feed your dog ? Maybe you should buy a puppy to feed your tiger? The point of the fact is the animals on.display are meant to be pets. They arnt for sale to be feeders. Its their policy that the display animals up for adoption are for pet purposes not for feeding theres other ways to feed your pets. Go elsewhere for food. I dont go to the butcher and get ****** off because he gave me a steak and not the grill to cook it on

Petco in NY sell feeder mice.
Anyway, as an alternative if you go to petco online you can probably setup the re-occurring delivery of the star fish and im almost positive they will not question it because it is online.
Plus you get rewards and can use your pals and online usually has alot of sales.

If you are not just trolling, you have some serious ethical issues. Are you seriously going to argue it's okay for them to display and sell animals they can't care for in any way, shape, or form due to their own refusal to feed them? An expensive animal like a harley can sit around for a couple weeks before someone buys it and if they don't feed them in that time period, they are going to die. Do you know what most people consider purposely starving an animal in your care? They call it torture - and doing that to an animal like a dog is a felony. Considering ALL Harleys are wild caught, you are really going to say it's cool for them to take them from the reef just to kill them? If you are proud of that, you shouldn't be in this hobby.

If they won't sell starfish to be eaten by the shrimp they sold or won't feed a starfish to the shrimp in their care - they have no business selling them. There is no ethical counter argument - period. If they want to make an ethical stand, they need to stop selling and stocking harlequin shrimp.

Not that they have an ethical leg to stand on considering they gleefully send people home with tanks and fish on the same day - fish that are way too big for the tank they just sold and completely incompatible. Just a couple weeks ago I watched them sell a handful if cichlids to a clueless young mother who was buying a 10g tank with no heater... and you are proud of them. Good for you...

Im not proud of them for some of their choices. Just what they claim to stand by. And secondly they obviously feed those animals while.theyre on.display but the ones on.display are foe pet purposes not food. If you guys hate the store so much dont go there i dont. Thats the problem you think writing a post here is going to do something to petco yet you still go 5there.??? Since they refused to sell me.mice to feed my snakes i dont give them any of my business. Im just stating the animals on.display are pets not food

Last I checked cats kill mice for sport not food and dogs absolutely do not go out tryin to eat cats because that's what they eat in the wild. Where in the natural animal kingdom has anyone heard of tigers eating puppies. Don't troll bro just go to petco you can see that all the animals on display are not in fact simply pets (they state feeder next to the barcode -_- mice, anoles, fish, crickets and a few others)

I'm not one to gloat ever but in this case saying petco employees aren't bright has caused me to defend myself.. I am 2 classes from a bachelor in Biology with a year of published research on gypsy moth defoliation effects on a pine forest ecosystem. I also volunteer at a local aquarium. On top of that I manage the research tanks for waterfront technology center that uses urchins for embryo dissociation research. Finally I am an aquatic specialist at my local petco. Don't judge people's intelligence soley on a day job they might have.

I have no problem with my closest petco. The whole store is run by reef nerds who have tanks of their own, some are even members in our local reef club. I have seen them chop up coco stars and feed them to harlequins in multiple tanks. I'm sure if I bought one and asked them to order a starfish or 2 every week for me they would. I think this is really more of a case by case basis for the stores. There is another petco not far from me I won't shop at because their staff is very inept with saltwater fish and they have no business selling them. Same store, but night and day at 2 different locations only miles apart.

Cool story bro and thx for the resume I guess however I never judged you or the employees at petco by where they work but the people who work there (there's a couple really intelligent petco employees I trust) Many if not most in my experiences are inexperienced or have minor knowledge in all the animals in their care and most of the time they admit it to you right then. Just last week the dog groomer at a petco in San Diego was trying to help someone in the aquatics section even after she told them she hardly knew anything about fish. (They were about to mix salt and freshwater fish)

Ditto, I won't go to the one in Lemon Grove but I'll go out of my way to the one in Point Loma

Yes you did by stating that petco employees are not bright. That's offensive "Bro". Also I blame the hobbyist for being so uneducated about their hobby, not a groomer who is trained in dog grooming.

When you buy a shirt and it doesnt look good on you, do you blame the employee who sold it to you? Maybe instead of an onslaught on the general employees if you find theres something wrong with the fish, you should mention to the general manager to make it less of a place youd like to avoid, or continue to avoid it and find reliable sources elsewhere. My argument is that if youre going to complain, do not generalize as if youve gone above and beyond in finding this same treatment at all stores.

Lol. I used to work at petco and I used to sell guinea pigs and parakeets as snake food to people until my manager found out and I got scolded.but in store we fed any baby mice or hamsters or gerbils to snakes didn't get what the big deal was. Just heard it was against policy to sell companion animals as food

find another source, they wont usually sell feeder mice or goldfish either, just company policy and mass confusion... Congrats you have tortured petco!:caked:

I was there the other day.

They sell Feeder Goldfish.

I know Chain Store's have Policies like that.

But that being said. If they are going to do that then they should not carry Harlequin Shrimp in the First Place.

Duh!

I used to work at PetSmart and not everyone is Clueless.

We did not sell Saltwater Fish so nobody there knew about that but me.

But everyone I worked with knew about Freshwater Fish and Did not make mistakes like the example given on the Cichlids in a 10 Gallon Tank.

That being said it depends where you are.

I was at a Petco the other Day and Needed a Replacement Bulb for my UV Sterilizer.

They carried the Sterilizer itself but not the Replacement Bulb (Never seen this before everyone that has ever had the Sterilizer sells the Bulbs too).

Anyways, I explained that to the Guy and he kept playing with a Bag of Flourite Next to the Sterilzer (As if there Might be a Bulb Hidden in Plant Substrate)?
