Phytoplankton culture carboy

I am trying to culture some phytoplankton in a carboy that is upside down. Basically like this:

So I bought a carboy off amazon.com, I cut a hole in the bottom as pictured above. I then bought a 1.25" PVC pipe and some fittings and some silicon. It goes from 1.25" PVC, to a 45 degree elbow, then goes down to a gate valve then a barb fitting. I drilled a hole in the elbow and inserted a 3/16" airline tubing for aeration, this is silicon'd in place. The assembly is held in place with some silicon. This is what it looks like:

I have concerns about this being leak free, especially the airline tubing. I used a ton of silicon, here is a close up of the neck:

I have two other carboys coming in the next few days, going to culture some Nannochloropsis oculata, Isochrysis galbana and some Tetraselmis chuii. Looking for any tips or tricks for making the next two better.
