Just throwing out a general question which I realize will differ from species to species...

However, as a rule of thumb how long would you wait before taking a fish home from the LFS?

Our local LFS let's customers place special orders. They call you when the order arrives.

Of course the fish is going to land in their tanks first.

I have the feeling that picking up the fish the next day is a recipe for disaster since the fish will be jumping from tank to tank.

How many days would let a fish rest before picking it up and taking it home?

Depends on your LFS.
Some I would not let them put it their tanks.
My fav LFS, I would let them keep it for a few days.

I hear you. They are a good quality organization. I don't doubt their ability to care for the fish. I'm just concerned that back to back moves will just stress the fish out too much.

In that case ask them if they will hold for a week

I always pick it up in the bag. Not going in their system and an additional acclimation makes it a safer proposition to me. If you are going to have them put it in their system, I would give it at least a few days before putting the fish through another acclimation. Matching sg either way is another thing you should do.
