Taking these through freshly cleaned glass, but it did cause some distortion.

Nice shots. Yeah distortion can be annoying . Which machine lense and do u think the distortions were caused by the lense or by the oblight angle to the glass
I find that without being square to the glass, distortion can come into play.
 
Usually when I’m using a macro lens on my phone I have to be pretty lined up or the photos will come out distorted.

I agree. I wasn't square to the glass at all, and you can see the distortion on the outsides of the pics.
