We haven’t run a canister filter before. We have a pretty large weir wall system in our sump with filter socks, bubbler waste collector thing, UV sterilizer, sponges, carbon, etc. We purchased this setup from someone leaving the hobby and we’ve just been adding to it. Haven’t had any water quality issues come up yet so, I don’t think adding a canister filter ever crossed our minds. We have wave makers which I think are called power heads inside the tank
Sounds like your running a sump.. This is good.. The "bubbler waste collector thing", is a protein skimmer. All good. How big of a sump is it? Can you add a picture. Knowing width/length/height we can calculate the water volume. This would tell us how big your sump is. Also what all is in it? I assume from what I have read your running a sump with filter socks.. Question how many filter socks, how often do you replace/clean them? I am also assuming your heater is in the sump. How big is the heater? Your running an apex. All good. A good picture of your sump and how it is setup would help all of us, help you.

One more thing, how often do you clean the sponges, and replace the carbon?

Just wanting to provide some other videos of the Sohal so others can see how he was behaving.

This is the only swim around the tank he ever really took.

How he spent the majority of his time…swimming vertical

Every once in a while, he would lay in the sand for a few moments and then return to his vertical swimming

This video is about 2 hours before he died, he was really struggling. We planned to take him to the LFS at 11am but he died around 10am.

The LFS asked us to bring the fish into the store along with a sample of our tank water. He’s going to do some investigating to see if we can pinpoint what could’ve happened. I will update, if we learn anything.

Highly unlikely your Tank Water has a problem with a healthy Powder Blue in there. I would suspect that your Sohal ran into something when they attempted to net him.

Sorry for you loss. It sure seems like there was trauma when he was captured as the other fish seem to be doing great.

I will send a photo when I get home.

We’re running 3 filter socks in the first section
Protein skimmer in the 2nd
In the back 1/4 of the 3rd section is some bio balls? They’re like black plastic balls we keep in a mesh bag
In the front 3/4ths of the 3rd section are layers. In the bottom is a sponge. Then in the next layer is 2 mesh bags of carbon, then some white gravel looking stuff that I’m unfamiliar with…and at the very top is some plant stuff Chado? I can’t remember what it’s called.
Then there is a super skinny section that has another sponge that is more dense than the other sponge
In the last section is just the pump that returns the water to the tank

Above the sump is a UV sterilizer. I’m not sure at which point in the filtration it goes through the UV but I know we have it running.

I change the water twice each week. About 20 gallons each time.

One of those times (so, once a week) I will rinse everything in the sump. I remove the filter bags and pressure wash them and then rinse them with discarded tank water. Brand new ones go in about once each month.

The sponges, and all mesh bags are rinsed in the discard tank water until they rinse mostly clear water.

My husband changes out the white pebble stuff and carbon. I believe every month or every other month.

I clean out the protein skimmer weekly as well. I scrub it in the sink with a sponge, no soap and rinse with tank discard water before returning it to the sump.

Looks like a good sump set up!

Really just seems like a freak injury, sorry about the loss again.

Also, the algae is called Chaeto! you got the pronunciation right but you probably never wrote it down so don't know its full name Chaetomorpha 😄

This fish was greatly distressed and there likely would not be much you could have done for it. Thanks for posting

I would research your UV Sterilizer Flow Rate. They need to tuned for the correct flow.

I think we are nitpicking here at this point.

It’s obvious the system doesn’t have much flaws and the UV probably is fine.

Unless we see other fish falling to the same problems, it was probably a singular injury.

Bluemon, I agree, but why bother running a UV if you don't have it setup correctly? Just saying. If 100% of their return water is running through it, it may be virtually useless.

It's kind of funny - when you said it was a paralyzed tail - I thought - how could you tell - but it seems like an injury issue.

Sorry for your loss. I had something similar happen with a show size Blonde Naso Tang several years ago. I had him for months in a QT tank. When I got my 210G tank and it had been running for a couple of months I started to move my fish over to it slowly. All the fish did fine except the Naso. He immediately showed signs of distress and died within 24hrs. I had acclimated slowly, matched temp, salinity and pH. It was a gentle transfer with a colander. There was no ammonia in the tank. No one picked on him. There was plenty of rock in the tank to hide and he was by far the biggest and most aggressive fish in the tank. To this day I have no idea what happened. Never seen anything like it before.

I think that’s the risk with large tangs.

They have some tremendous speed from point zero, and when introduced to new environments, they can dart around and accidentally run into the glass or rocks.

That can be quite bad, and I’m sure they can get concussed or something similar

In my case I don't think that's what happened.
